The Best Cooking Tips You'll Find Anywhere | Marijuana for MRSA

When you are saut??ing anything, make sure that you use a big enough pan to accommodate the amount of food that you are putting in it. You do not want to overcrowd the food. Overcrowding the food will cook it by steaming it instead, and it will ruin your saut??.

Soup is for all seasons! When we usually think of soup, we think of a hot bowl of chicken noodle when we are sick or a piping hot bowl of chili on a cold winter night. But don?t forget about soup in the summer, too. There are a lot of easy recipes for refreshing cold soups like gazpacho and fruit soups to enjoy during warm months.

If you are looking to reduce the sodium content of the meals you cook, take a careful look at your spice shelf. Many prepared spices are surprisingly high in sodium, whether or not they have a salty taste. And of course, avoid adding regular salt. Look to natural herbs and simpler spices to add flavor without sodium.

Freeze some ice tea and other cold drinks up in ice cube trays. You can use the frozen drink cubes as ice on those particularly hot days. That way, your drink won?t be diluted by the quickly melting ice cubes. It makes for a nice change, not having to run back and forth to the refrigerator, just to top off your drink glass.

Use a collapsible steamer basket to make the best steamed vegetables. These devices are available widely and cheaply. They can slip into almost any pot you already have and can be used for almost any vegetable you would like to enjoy. Be sure to watch your cook time to avoid getting mushy vegetables.

If you are getting frustrated because the herbs are flying all over the place and landing on the floor when you are chopping them up, try tossing a little salt onto your cutting board. This will make for a coarser surface, and keep the small pieces from moving around the board too much.

Make ?hands-free? meatloaf. If you don?t like to get your hands messy when mixing meatloaf ingredients together, place all the ingredients in a large resealable plastic bag. Close the bag tightly and knead everything together until well mixed. Kids really enjoying helping with this, it?s a great way to get them involved in cooking!

Try to plan for a week?s worth of meals. If you can get in the habit of planning a weekly menu, it will save time on grocery shopping, and will reduce the stress of having to come up with a meal idea at the last minute. Also, keep a magnet-backed notepad on the refrigerator, and jot down any items that you are running low on. This way, your kitchen will always be stocked with the ingredients that you use regularly.

Oil added to a pan while sauteing needs to be fully heated before it is absorbed by your ingredients. Slowly pouring the oil along the edge just inside the pan will ensure it is the correct temperature by the time it reaches your ingredients.

Don?t use prepared seasoning mixes when you cook, especially if you have high blood pressure. These mixes often have a high sodium content. Instead, use fresh herbs and spices, or make sure you choose a low-salt mix. For more flavor, try adding lemon or lime zest or a few chili peppers to your meal.

Looking for an easy way to prepare the perfect poached egg. While cooking the eggs, adding lemon juice or vinegar, to the water you are using for poaching the eggs will stop them from spreading out. Proteins will coagulate when an acid is used; this will help ensure your get that perfect poached egg every time.

Always add oil to the side of the pan when saut??ing. If you find that you need more oil in your pan while you are cooking, never put it right in the middle. Add it to the side of your pan. That way, it will be sufficiently heated by the time it reaches the food.

All in all, cooking out of your comfort zone is easier than you think. You have learned some awesome tips on how to cook. Your palate should be well on its way around the world and your cooking skills, much richer. With these recipes and tips, you will soon be cooking like a multicultural pro.

4 Things You Should Know About Cash Back Credit Cards | How ...

?

Cash back credit cards are the favorite types of cards to have among many people. This is because all you have to do is use your card and you will be receiving a portion of your money back which is basically like you are being paid to shop. Not to mention the fact that you do not always have to get money back sometimes you are even able to get other types of rewards as well. So, as you can see getting one of these types of cards can be very beneficial to you.

You Need To Compare Them

As we already mentioned this type of credit card differs in the type of rewards that they offer so it is important for you to understand the rewards that you will be receiving. Just because the card is label ?cash back? it does not always mean that you will be receiving money back from your purchases. So, to avoid disappointment in the future you should make sure that you are clear as to what type of reward it is that you will be receiving.

Use it or lose it

Many companies require for you to actually use your card periodically or you will lose the benefit of receiving cash back. So, before you sign your name on the contract you should be sure to make sure that you know all of the rules and guidelines that come along to be eligible for your rewards. Additionally, some cards have cash back offers that expire regardless of how much the card is used after a certain period of time. This is something else that you will want to be on the lookout for when you are applying for cash back credit cards.

Know the Cap

Some companies put caps on the cards which mean that you can only receive a certain amount back each year. However, there are companies out there that have no limit. If you are a big spender this is something that you will want to make sure you are aware of before signing with the company or you will not be able to get all of the rewards that you deserve. Not to mention the fact that you may end up resenting a really good company behind this as well.

They Work Different Ways

Some cards only allow you to receive money back when you use your card as credit while others have no preference between credit and debit. To make sure that you are properly using your card this is something that you will need to be aware of as well. It is not a good feeling at all to be waiting for a reward and find out that it is never going to come because you did not use the correct method when you were shopping and spending a lot of money on a very large purchase. This is why you should make sure you ask questions before signing any contract.

With a cashback credit card, you can earn money back every time you spend. Compare wide selection of cashback credit cards with uSwitch.

Scientist at Work: Traveling to Tropical Utah

Randall Irmis, curator of paleontology at the Natural History Museum of Utah and an assistant professor at the University of Utah, is investigating the rise of dinosaurs in southeastern Utah.

Two hundred million years ago the ancient life we are hoping to discover in the rocks of southeastern Utah did not reside in the high arid desert climate found in the Colorado Plateau of today. Rather, the Triassic American Southwest was crisscrossed by rivers, streams and floodplains similar in size to today?s Mississippi River and its tributaries.

The rocks in which we are searching, called the Chinle Formation, comprise the sediments laid down by this ancient river system.

The formation?s multicolored candy-striped beds are famous not only for their early dinosaur fossils, but also because they preserve large logs of colorful petrified wood, remains of giant conifer trees that dotted the landscape 220 to 210 million years ago.

These remains are best preserved in places like the Painted Desert of Petrified Forest National Park in northeastern Arizona. The fossil trees, other leaf remains and the sediments themselves help paleontologists understand what the environment was like millions of years ago, and how it has changed through time.

The plants, trees and animals from these ancient ecosystems are well known for Arizona and New Mexico, but poorly understood from rocks in Utah. One of the major questions our team hopes to answer is whether the environment, plants and animals in southern Utah might have been different from those preserved in the Chinle Formation rocks farther south.

We have reason to think this might be the case. During the Triassic Period, most of the continents we know today were assembled together in a single supercontinent called Pangaea. An ambitious early dinosaur could have conceivably walked from Argentina to Canada if it had the time.

Within this giant continent, what is now North America was much closer to the Equator; specifically, the American Southwest was in the tropics, between 5 and 15 degrees north latitude, rather than in its present position of 30 to 40 degrees north. This had distinct effects on climate, which affected the organisms in these ancient ecosystems.

Based on detailed new information from rocks of similar age of eastern North America, we know that the Triassic climate at the Equator was hot and humid, but as you traveled north of 5 degrees, conditions became progressively warmer and drier, with a more seasonal climate.

This greatly affected the animals living in these ecosystems, with different types of herbivores living at different latitudes, despite the fact that there were no great physical barriers to prevent them from mixing.

Our team is hoping to discover whether the Chinle Formation of southern Utah was drier and more seasonal than that of Arizona, and if so, how that affected the types of plants and animals living there. The only way to find this out is to put our eyes and feet to the rocks, and look for clues to the ancient life and climate of Utah 210 million years ago.

GOP convention team reaches out to women, vets

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? With the Republican National Convention at last in full-throated roar, nominee Mitt Romney and his team reached out Wednesday to critical voting groups ? veterans, Hispanics and women ? while gleefully mocking the man he is out to defeat in November.

The GOP nominee ducked out of his own convention in Tampa to tell the American Legion Convention in Indianapolis that a Romney administration would do better by a military threatened with "reckless" defense cuts and by veterans hungry for jobs.

"This president's biggest failure is that he's not delivered those jobs," Romney said. "As president, I will get America to work again."

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., a top Hispanic voice in the GOP, made the rounds of morning talk shows to defend the GOP nominee's policies. And Ann Romney and Janna Ryan, the wife of Romney's running mate, teamed up to headline a "Women for Romney" fundraiser.

At the women's event, Mrs. Romney offered her husband as "the one person who is going to turn this country around," and promised that her husband would keep in mind the needs of women and families, if elected. Later, she attended a Latino Coalition lunch, where son Craig addressed guests in Spanish, and described his father as "a man you can trust."

Mrs. Romney told the Latino crowd that Democrats try to make it look like Republicans "don't care about this community. That's not true. We very much care about this community."

Latinos, she said, "are mistaken if they think they are going to be better off" if President Barack Obama wins re-election, she said.

The politics played out as Hurricane Isaac blew ashore on the Gulf Coast, weakening to a tropical storm by afternoon. Officials in Louisiana said that New Orleans' flood protection system was holding up as Isaac moved through the area.

Romney opened his remarks to the veterans by saying that while it appeared Isaac would not inflict the kind of damage Hurricane Katrina caused seven years ago, "this must be a heavy burden."

"Our country must do all we can to help them recover," he said.

Obama, campaigning before a college crowd in Charlottesville, Va., pledged that the government was "doing every single thing we need to do to make sure the folks down there are taken care of."

As for the GOP show unfolding in Tampa, the president pronounced himself unimpressed.

"You can listen very carefully, very hard, and you won't hear them offer a clear serious path forward," he said.

The taunting went both ways.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, in remarks prepared for Wednesday night's convention session, said the country knows what's on the president's iPod, but has no idea what he plans to do about a looming tax hike. He said Obama seems more interested in earning spot on the pro golf tour than in solving the nation's problems.

The main draw for Wednesday night is vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan, the 42-year-old Wisconsin congressman and author of a tough budget that remakes the way the government spends money.

"I think people are going to like what they see because we are offering specific, bold solutions to get people back to work, to get this country back on the right track," Ryan said in a taped interview with WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee.

Ryan tested the microphones in the convention hall at midday as his children had fun at the podium.

Rubio, interviewed on "CBS This Morning," held out Ryan as a serious policy thinker who's "going to have a bunch of new fans across this country" after he speaks.

But Obama's re-election campaign released an online video casting Ryan, who is hugely popular with conservatives, as a politician from a "bygone era" whose budget proposals threaten Medicare and would gut funding for Planned Parenthood.

A poll by the Pew Research Center and The Washington Post found Americans deeply divided about Ryan, whom they described as conservative, intelligent, fake, phony.

Romney's nomination now official, he was free at last to start dipping into his general-election pot of campaign cash.

"We're excited that now he's going to be able to spend money, both in English and in Spanish, to explain to people how his policies will help grow the economy, help small business, help people have the confidence to invest in the future," Rubio said."

To ensure the cash keeps rolling in, Ann Romney emailed supporters a fundraising appeal that echoed her Tuesday night speech to the convention.

"This man will not fail," she promised in the plea.

Obama, courting young voters for a second straight day, exhorted a crowd near the University of Virginia not to lose sight of the vision of hope and change that he laid out four years ago, citing policies he's implemented like student loan reforms and middle-class tax cuts.

"You can't get tired now, because we've got more work to do," he told the students.

Beyond Ryan and McConnell, Wednesday's lineup includes 2008 Republican presidential candidate John McCain and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Romney speaks Thursday night to bring down the curtain-closing balloons. Obama's Democratic National Convention follows next week in Charlotte, N.C.

Rice, warming up for her speech in an appearance on "CBS This Morning," said the voice of the United States in world affairs "has been muted" under this president, creating a chaotic and dangerous security environment.

Romney hit the same tone before the veterans.

"In the past four years, President Obama has allowed our leadership to diminish," he said. "In dealings with other nations, he has given trust where it is not earned, insult where it is not deserved and apology where it's not due."

Opinion polls show Obama getting high marks on national security after ending the war in Iraq, drawing down the conflict in Afghanistan and ordering the killing of terrorist leader Osama bin Laden.

Obama's allies did their best to counter Romney and the Republicans.

Obama campaign spokesman Jen Psaki called Romney and Ryan "the two most unpopular presidential nominee and vice presidential nominee in modern history. They have two days to rebrand who they are, what they stand for."

She said of Mrs. Romney's appeal to women: "Surrounding yourself with strong women is a great thing, but it doesn't change your positions."

First lady Michelle Obama, on her own outreach campaign, traveled to New York to promote her healthy-living initiatives while visiting "The Dr. Oz Show" and Rachael Ray's talk show. The programs will air next month, closer to the election.

Mrs. Obama also was making a guest appearance on Wednesday's "Late Show with David Letterman."

The construction industry is in crisis

Before becoming an MP, I spent 30 years in construction, working for some big players in the industry before setting up my own business in Fife in 1986. At the time, the industry had its challenges, but the succession of grim news over the course of the recession really has given me pause for thought and made me wonder if I would have succeeded in similar circumstances today.

Over recent months, poor performance in construction has been obvious in almost every major statistical release from the ONS. Last week?s GDP figures confirmed of contraction of close to 5% in the construction industry and no or anaemic growth going back to every quarter since mid-2010.

And in Scotland, the numbers are even more eye-watering. While some sectors have performed modestly over the past year, construction has seen a 7.3% reduction. For an industry that employs around 6% of all people in work in Scotland, this decline has a devastating effect.

And the signs are that there is little chance of an improvement any time soon. While there have been sparks of life in the industry, with announcements of a few major construction projects in Scotland over the past few weeks, the signs all point to a continued slowdown. Yesterday, the quarterly report from the Scottish Building Federation reported a further drop in industry confidence and only 5% of businesses saying that they are more confident about the prospects for the next year than the previous one.

Much of the continued crisis in the construction industry has its roots in the slowdown in large scale, privately funded projects. However, there is much that Governments at both Holyrood and Westminster could be doing.

At Holyrood, the glacial pace of the Scottish Government?s reform agenda for procurement is holding up one valuable source of business for building companies. While Alex Salmond has repeatedly pointed to ?shovel ready projects? and complained about lack of support from the UK Government for capital spending, it seems that his own administration at Holyrood are doing little to ease the way for firms to bid for public contracts.

63% of construction firms surveyed by the Scottish Building Federation with a turnover of less than ?2m said they had submitted no pre-qualification questionnaires for public procurement in the past three years. Many also said they were put off from applying for public projects due to the high costs associated with application. It?s little wonder that firms choose not to apply for this work when the average success rate for application is only 3%. The Scottish Government also needs to make sure it?s doing everything it can to attract SMEs ? including ensure that there are contract appropriate for every size of business.

The UK Government has also stymied the sector with the continued difficulty for developers to access finance for new construction projects. As Ed Balls and others have pointed out, banks need to start lending to small and medium sized enterprises again in order to get the economy moving.

Finally, political decisions in Scotland have very directly impacted on the construction sector. When around 40% of the industry?s business comes from housing, the Scottish government?s decision to take ?100m out of the housing budget couldn?t have helped the sector at this time.

What?s needed from both Governments ? at Holyrood and Westminster ? is recognition that the fortunes of our economy are tied to the fortunes of our construction industry. The woeful GDP figures from recent months could have been remedied with stronger performance in construction. After all, not only is construction a massive industry in its own right. It?s also the industry that keeps other sectors in business through new offices, warehouses, roads and rail.

But at its roots, this economic crisis continues to be a crisis of demand. If the Government can?t provide us all ? consumers and builders alike ? with the reassurance we need about future economic performance, then further slumps in our construction sector are inevitable.

Akin Says Rape Pregnancy 'Rare'

Missouri Republican Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin, who opposes abortion in most cases, including rape, said in a television interview today that it is "really rare" that victims of "legitimate rape" get pregnant.

"From what I understand from doctors, that's really rare," Akin, who is running against Democrat Sen. Claire McCaskill, said in an interview on the "Jaco Report" on KTVI-TV. "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

He added that if the woman does become pregnant, "the punishment ought to be on the rapist."

McCaskill called the comments "offensive."

"It is beyond comprehension that someone can be so ignorant about the emotional and physical trauma brought on by rape," she said in a statement. "The ideas that Todd Akin has expressed about the serious crime of rape and the impact on its victims are offensive."

Akin later released a statement saying he "misspoke" and that he has "deep empathy" for victims of rape.

"In reviewing my off-the-cuff remarks, it's clear that I misspoke in this interview and it does not reflect the deep empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year," he said. " Those who perpetrate these crimes are the lowest of the low in our society and their victims will have no stronger advocate in the Senate to help ensure they have the justice they deserve."

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A man in an Afghan police uniform shot and killed an international service member on Sunday, NATO said, raising the death toll to 10 in such attacks in the space of just two weeks.

The surge in violence by Afghan allies against their international partners has raised doubts about the ability of the two forces to work together at a key transition time. Afghan forces are expected to take over security for the country by the end of 2014, when the majority of international combat forces are scheduled to leave.

On the other side, a coalition airstrike killed dozens of Taliban militants, including one of their leaders, officials said.

Few details were immediately available about Sunday's killing of a coalition member in southern Afghanistan. NATO said only that they and Afghan authorities were investigating. Afghan officials could not be reached for comment.

The Taliban have been actively recruiting members of the Afghan security forces, saying in a statement last week that they considered these turncoat attacks a major part of their strategy against international forces.

Once an anomaly, these attacks have been climbing in recent months. There have been 30 such turncoat attacks so far this year, up from 11 in 2011.

On Saturday Defense Secretary Leon Panetta called Afghan President Hamid Karzai to encourage him to work with U.S. commanders to ensure more rigorous vetting of Afghan recruits.

On Friday it was disclosed that U.S. troops have been ordered to carry loaded weapons at all times in Afghanistan, even when they are on their bases. The order was a precaution against such insider attacks.

The monthlong Ramadan fasting period that ended Sunday has been particularly violent. The Eid al-Fitr holiday on Sunday continued the trend.

Insurgents killed two pairs of brothers with links to the government as well as three NATO service members in three separate attacks.

In the first attack, a bomb hidden in a cemetery in the southern province of Helmand killed a police chief and his brother who were visiting a family grave for the holiday.

Seven of the men's family members were wounded in the early-morning blast in the provincial capital of Lashkar Gah, said the Helmand deputy police chief, Ghulam Rabbani.

No one claimed responsibility, but the attack was consistent with the Taliban's strategy to target authorities and others who align themselves with the government or international forces.

The two men were brothers of a lawmaker for Helmand province, Abdulwadood Popal, who was not at the cemetery at the time of the blast. The family was visiting the grave after attending a morning prayer service for the holiday, which ends the month-long Ramadan fasting period.

Later in the western Farah province, gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on the car of an intelligence service official as he was driving home from a family visit, killing him and his brother, who worked for the customs service.

Another relative was wounded, provincial deputy police chief Ghulam Ghows Malyar said.

In central Afghanistan, three NATO service members were killed when a vehicle struck a roadside bomb, officials said. Bamiyan Gov. Habiba Sarabi said the blast went off in Kohmard district while the troops were out on patrol.

NATO forces confirmed that three coalition service members were killed in a bombing, but did not provide their nationalities or other details.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement.

Including Sunday's deaths, at least 41 international troops have been killed so far this month in Afghanistan.

In a speech marking the holiday, Karzai condemned the Ramadan attacks.

"The enemies of Muslims ... during the holy month of Ramadan treated the nation of Afghanistan cruelly: bombs, explosions in mosques, suicide attacks in mosques," Karzai said.

He challenged the Taliban to disavow them.

"If you are not behind this, it is being done in your name. As Muslims, as Afghans, raise your voice and say that you did not do it," he appealed.

In a message ahead of Eid al-Fitr, Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar instructed his fighters once again to avoid killing or wounding Afghan civilians.

The Taliban have said previously, however, that they do not consider those who collaborate with the government to be civilians.

Killings of Afghan civilians have surged this year, according to the United Nations. Civilian deaths from targeted killings and assassinations jumped 34 percent for the first six months of 2012 to 255 killed, from 190 in 2011, the U.N. said in a report issued earlier this month.

Also Sunday, officials said that an airstrike by coalition forces in the northeast killed a large group of Taliban fighters and a local insurgent leader. At least two dozen insurgents were killed in the attack in Kunar province, said NATO forces spokesman Maj. Martyn Crighton.

Kunar Gov. Sayed Fazlullah Wahidi said the strike killed as many as 50 insurgents who had massed in a remote area of the province. He said it was not clear why they had gathered.

Mexico's MVS to challenge government's spectrum recovery

Mexican communications company MVS Comunicaciones said Wednesday it plans to put up a legal fight against government plans to recover high-frequency spectrum that the company has been battling to keep for a mobile broadband venture.

The government said last week it won't renew expiring spectrum licenses in the 2.5-gigahertz band, and plans to recover existing concessions with the idea of auctioning the bandwidth for use in modern telecommunications services, such as fourth-generation mobile, as other countries are doing around the world.

The decision mostly affects MVS, which has been fighting to keep 190 megahertz of bandwidth in the 2.5 Ghz-2.69 Ghz range that were freed up when it swapped its pay-television operation to a new satellite TV service.

MVS Chief Executive Joaquin Vargas said at a press conference that the Communications and Transport Ministry took the decision to recover the spectrum while negotiations were still ongoing with the company, including a proposal under which the company would return 70 megahertz of its 190 Mhz in bandwidth."The decision was already taken and at the end of the day we were fooled," he said.

Mr. Vargas said government officials pressured the company on unrelated issues, using the renewal of its licenses as a bargaining tool, and also charged that the government sought to overcharge MVS for the use of the spectrum by setting fees as if it were for mobile telephony, which "any local or foreign investor" would reject.

In comments to reporters Wednesday, Communications and Transport Minister Dionisio Perez-Jacome denied there was any "blackmail" or conditioning on the part of the government. He reiterated that the bandwidth was being underutilized, and that the government was receiving inadequate payment for it.

"He [Mr. Vargas] was told that what he had to do was pay what the frequencies were worth," Mr. Perez-Jacome said.

Round 17 Football Review - Hatherleigh Sports & Recreation

Versus Nangwarry

?We traveled to Nangwarry last weekend and all of our football teams had strong wins against the Saints.

?The Under 11?s kicked the day off bright and early and while we had to lend a few our boys to the Saints to make up the teams, we still had a really good game, with plenty of skill and endeavor on show. It was the last game for several of our boys, who will move up to Junior Colts next season. These boys ? Max Telfer, Loius Brown, Riley Chester, Spencer Jones, Doug Treloar, Jacob Lang and Will Chay ? have played great footy this year and really looked after the little guys on the team. The future of the Eagles looks great with these boys coming through the ranks! That was our last game of U11s for the year, so I would like to thank all the parents who have helped goal umpire, time and cheer us on!

?The Junior Colts beat the Saints by 24 points, with Mitch Pulmer and Alex Buhlmann kicking two goals each and Harry Coote, Jack Gray and Alex Spher each scoring one goal. Awards: Lachie Lang (President?s), Alex Buhlmann (Pete Walters), Jack Gray (G. Nilsson), (HFC Ladies Committee) and Harry Coote (HSRC Steak).

?The Senior Colts also won easily, thrashing Nangwarry by 74 points. Jed Telfer booted four goals and Joseph Brooks, Sam Telfer, Sam Sutherland, Fergus Slape, Tom Jackman-Tilley, Mitch Pulmer and Tom Chant each kicked one goal. Awards: Angus Altschwager (Seebohm?s Sportspower), Fergus Slape (C. Gilbertson), Ben Leopold (G. Nilsson), Joseph Brooks (HFC Ladies Committee) and Lewis Walker (HSRC Steak).

In their second to last game of the year, the Reserves let Nangwarry kick the first three goals, but once we started playing like we should, we came away with an easy win. Dan Sutherland helped us out after playing senior colts and was named best on ground. Matt Bowman played well?at centre half back and Brownie kicked six goals and has now won the league goal-kicking award. Awards: Daniel Sutherland (K&S Ampol), Matt Bowman (Dave Reilly?s Panel & Paint), Shane Lambert (Beachport Hotel), and Josh Clarke (Prince of Wales Hotel).

If we play to our potential against Port MacDonnell we will hopefully finish the year with a win. Thank you to our sponsors and supporters for your help throughout the year.

Like the Reserves, the A Grade started off slowly against the Saints and let them get the first few goals on the board. We soon sorted ourselves out though and ended up winning easily by 86 points. Brett Sneath and Jack Skeer both had a great day in front of goals, each kicking five, while Tylah Saunders kicked four goals.??Awards: Todd Watson (Millicent Golf), Mat Faulkner (Somerset Hotel), Tylah Saunders (Beachport Hotel) and Cameron Slape (Prince of Wales Hotel).

110-year-old Pa. widow gets WWI benefits boost

EBENSBURG, Pa. (AP) ? A 110-year-old Pennsylvania widow is getting a benefits boost because of her husband's World War I service.

Family members say Alda Collins is now getting about $1,000 a month to assist with her stay at a nursing home near Ebensburg. She had been getting $36 a month.

Her son tells the Daily American of Somerset (http://bit.ly/OURXLU) that Collins lived by herself in a trailer until she was 106. She can use a walker, feeds herself and knows the Pirates are in second place.

For years, she taught in a one-room schoolhouse.

Her husband, William, served in the Army in World War I. He died in 1976 at age 81.

The family had been asking the Veterans Administration for the benefits adjustment since 2008 and recently got help from U.S. Rep. Mark Critz.

The Value Of Podcasts For Internet Marketers | Marketing Mii Dallas ...

Perhaps IM marketers feel podcasts are not cool or effective in marketing. There?s a perception that they?re like radio shows or online radio stations. The intent of podcasting for marketers is to use it in the exact same way as you would an article. Some people even make people pay to listen to their podcasts. Or of course most people offer them for free. As you develop your listening audience, then you can work your marketing message into the mix. We?ll discuss some effective points about podcast creation for you.

Always add your old podcasts to an archive so any new subscribers can take advantage of them. Just like with anything else, if you make something good enough then they will make recommendations to other people. Then any new subscribers to your podcasts will be able to go back to the archives. This is why publishing an archive is important. Simply stated, you?ll be able to build more business relationships with people and make more sales by skillfully using your archives. So think about the future, and that?s another obvious reason for creating good quality podcasts. If you think it?ll be hard to archive and publish then you?re wrong because blogging CMS platforms have it as an automatic feature. We know you want to have greater Review Engine ROI, and what business on the net would not? First, remember you will need to research and plan well in advance to avoid costly mistakes. How well you understand the people in your particular niche is critical, and it seems to us, based on observation, that lots of marketers have no clue about it. The success of all your marketing and advertising rests on the degree of knowledge you have about your target. The competitive edge will be much sharper and in your favor with the knowledge you will gain. You will never be able to fully implement the principles of copywriting without understanding the people who will read it and putting that understanding into the words. There is quite a complex process involved that ultimately leads to people clicking on an order button or subscribing, etc. It goes without saying, but we?ll say it, that you need to record in a place that is as quiet as possible. Don?t get overly concerned if you still manage to capture unwanted sounds because you?ll simply edit those out in the end. If you have to, you can even hang blankets on windows or doors to help deaden external noises. If it?s very quiet, then the quality of your recording and your voice will be much better. You also won?t be worried about noise when it?s quiet, and you?ll be able to concentrate better.

Asking for feedback about your podcasts will always help you no matter what. Give your listeners a chance to tell you what they think about your podcast. The only point is to become better and improve. Ask for suggestions for future topics. This can be scary-especially if your ego is fragile-but it can also be very helpful. Your listeners will appreciate that you want to know what they will think. When you use someone?s idea, and they see it, they will really get a kick out of it. If you go through this process, you?ll discover that it?s much more powerful than if you did nothing.

You?ll find a powerful approach to building a subscriber base by using podcasting. If you can build a large base, then if you do it right you can convert them to more sales. Just make high quality podcasts with good information because people may spread them around for you. Just don?t be like so many others who totally ignore this excellent marketing method. Remember: podcasting is just as valuable to your career as videos or text!

G+ Posts Show Your Exact Location On A GMap, And That Shouldn?t Scare You

Google Maps BullseyeAs the lines between Google and Google+ grow blurrier, so do privacy norms. Today we're posed with whether we want our location made abundantly clear to anyone we share G+ posts with.?Now when you post to G+ from mobile and you enable automatic location sharing or geo-tag yourself at a local spot, a big Google Map of your exact location is shown in the G+ stream on the web. The combination of exact geo-tagging and these maps give Google+ much more aggressive location sharing than Facebook or Twitter. It certainly enriches the feed, but injecting maps into G+ requires us to be more conscious of what we expose.

Social media not always a useful tool | Stuff.co.nz

I suspect I'm spending too much time promoting the company through social media, such as Twitter and my blog, at the expense of other parts of the business. How much should I tweet each day and how do I know if I'm focusing on this area too much?

A: Social media is becoming a strong part of any company's marketing, but there is too much 'knee-jerk' attention paid to it, based on little more than the latest hype.??

Like any marketing you want to know what you are doing is working and social media can be extremely useful in this sense because of the capability to measure your impact. You can tap into Google analytics for free and there are any number of online platforms that will deliver stats on your reach/engagement/impact from your activities.

You can learn a lot from free online sources, but there is great value in tapping into a knowledgeable professional in this space to build a social media strategy. The hard bit is sifting out the snake oil peddlers. Check out any local social media clubs, a good place to swap stories and get referrals locally.???

Invest in some early stage analysis and advice. Do read up on social media so you take the basics out of any bill you end up getting from a professional. Focus on getting value, but social media requires investment like any marketing.??

Like all marketing it is a feeder into sales channels like your website, your sales team, or another key deliverables you want your customers to get stuck into.??

If you're not investing in those areas, you're probably wasting your time tweeting furiously.

In terms of whether you are spending too much time on it, there are two ways to look at this.?

1. Listening. You can learn a lot about market trends, competitors, customer feedback and media commentary if you refine your social media channels.??

2. Contributing. You must contribute useful, valuable nuggets of info, through original content, commentary on existing content or simply referring quality content to your followers.??

Nick Churchouse is from Wellington startup business incubator Creative HQ.???

A: Social media is nothing more than a marketing tool to connect and engage your target market.??

The big question is are you reaching your target audience and engaging them with relevant information? What is your rationale for using this channel to reach your customers? Do your customers and potential customers actually use social media for business?

Social media is about buyer engagement rather than simply building lists.?

If you are not seeing any measureable return for your effort then something needs to change. It could be type of content you are generating, or the way you are encouraging conversations.

Be careful about using social media as a broadcast only mechanism.

Social media needs to be put into balance with all other forms of marketing that you are using. In some cases it can be best or worst use of your time.???

Look at how you are measuring the outcome from this marketing exercise. Some examples may be: key customers reading and referring to your content, people referring your content on, customer enquiries and of course sales.??

A family forced to leave their home may be unable to bring their pets with them, even though they consider the pets to be members of the family. This is because some people move in with relatives or friends who are unable to have animals in their homes. Others go from being homeowners to renters and have to face landlords who may severely restrict the number or size of pets that people can bring or may prohibit pets altogether. It?s a heartbreaking situation. Fortunately, it hasn?t gone completely unnoticed, and some charitable organizations have stepped up to lend a hand.

What sort of Bankruptcy Attorney In Chi town Might help

In the world of public finance, Orange County, California, has long had an unfortunate distinction: In 1994, the county filed the largest municipal bankruptcy declaration in history, seeking court assistance to restructure $1.7 billion in debt. This month, however, Orange County finally lost its dubious claim to fame. On November 9, political leaders in Jefferson County, Alabama ? home of Birmingham, the state?s largest city ? asked a federal bankruptcy court to help the county restructure debt of more than $4 billion. The county?s debt burden stems from a disastrous investment in a local sewer system and amounts to nearly $7,000 for each of the 658,000 men, women and children who call the county home. That a bankruptcy declaration of such magnitude is possible has raised alarms nationally over whether more municipal crises may be on the way. In this explainer, Stateline examines what it means when a municipality files for Chapter 9 bankruptcy ? and why states should care. What is Chapter 9? It?s the portion of the federal bankruptcy code that applies to municipalities. Created by Congress in 1937, it allows municipalities to seek court protection in the event of fiscal crisis and is meant to ensure that basic government functions can continue while policy makers restructure their debt. Chapter 9 differs from other sections of the bankruptcy code, such as Chapter 11 and Chapter 13, which generally provide court relief to cash-strapped businesses and individuals, respectively. Who can file for Chapter 9? Only municipalities ? not states ? can file for Chapter 9. To be legally eligible, municipalities must be insolvent, have made a good-faith attempt to negotiate a settlement with their creditors and be willing to devise a plan to resolve their debts. They also need permission from their state government. Fifteen states have laws granting their municipalities the right to file for Chapter 9 protection on their own, according to James Spiotto, a bankruptcy specialist with the Chicago law firm of Chapman and Cutler. Those states are Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Idaho, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New York, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and Washington. The remaining states all want a say in the process, in some cases requiring that municipalities receive state approval before they file. One of those states, Pennsylvania, is now in the process of challenging the bankruptcy declaration made by its own capital city, Harrisburg, in October. Georgia is the only state that does not allow its municipalities to file for bankruptcy under any circumstances. Georgia municipalities in severe fiscal trouble ?are left to work things out within the state political system,? says Paul Maco, a municipal bankruptcy expert and partner with the Vinson & Elkins law firm in Washington, D.C. That could include asking the legislature for emergency funds. States have plenty of serious fiscal problems, too. Why can?t they file for bankruptcy? States have not been granted that authority by Congress, nor have they sought it. The idea of allowing state bankruptcy was floated earlier this year by Newt Gingrich, the former U.S. House speaker and current presidential candidate, and Jeb Bush, the former Florida governor. In a Los Angeles Times op-ed, the two Republicans argued that bankruptcy would be a way for strapped states such as California and Illinois to tackle their enormous debts, particularly for public pensions and other retirement benefits. State leaders from both parties repudiated the idea. ?The mere existence of a law allowing states to declare bankruptcy only serves to increase interest rates, raise the costs of state government and create more volatility in financial markets,? Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman, a Republican, and Washington Governor Chris Gregoire, a Democrat, said in a joint statement. The last time any state came close to bankruptcy ? by defaulting on its loans? was during the Great Depression, when Arkansas racked up $160 million in debt on what was then a $14 million annual budget. How common are municipal bankruptcies? Very rare. Since 1937, when Congress added Chapter 9 to the federal bankruptcy code, about 620 municipalities have filed for bankruptcy. That?s fewer than 10 a year. In the last year alone, by comparison, there were nearly 12,000 bankruptcy filings under Chapter 11 and 418,000 under Chapter 13, according to the administrative office of the U.S. Courts. Most municipalities that do file for bankruptcy are special tax districts and small jurisdictions that do not issue public debt. Municipal utilities are a common example. What happens once a municipality files for Chapter 9? Municipal finances move into the jurisdiction of the courts, but not in the way that corporate or personal finances in Chapter 11 or Chapter 13 cases do. Under those sections, courts have broad leverage to control the finances of the company or individual to chart a path forward. In addition, creditors have more leverage, such as by foreclosing on the home of a bankrupt individual. In Chapter 9 bankruptcy, creditors cannot, for instance, foreclose on a municipal building to recoup the money they are owed. More importantly, the courts themselves have no authority to make spending or other policy decisions on behalf of the municipality. That power remains with the locality under the U.S. Constitution. Under Chapter 9, municipalities must come up with their own debt restructuring plans, and courts approve or reject it with input from other stakeholders. Chapter 7 bankruptcy is a possible debtor lifeline

Be aware that federal modifications in 2005 make it more difficult to qualify for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. You must pass an ?earnings test? similar to bankruptcy law prior to the 1970s-era federal changes. You must prove to the court that your income makes it impossible to pay off your current creditors. Removal of the earnings test led to more strategic bankruptcies, even during strong economies. Congress eliminated this perceived loophole with its 2005 revisions to federal law.

What may tip scales for Phoenix companies on filing Chapter 7?

While National Service Industries could have chosen a Chapter 13 filing, it is likely that the significant difference between the company?s assets and their debts made the Chapter 7 filing more sensible for this company. There?s no word on what specific factors led to the company?s asset-debt imbalance. Perhaps it, like many Phoenix area businesses, faced stiff competition and was confronted with high costs of doing business. In a faltering economy, the chances of successfully climbing out of severe financial distress can be low. Sometimes dissolving under a Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing is the optimal option.
