The Sun News The scholarship of crime

By Okey Ndibe

Last week, I came across a cruel, disturbing story that illustrated a festering crisis in Nigerian education.

The story had to do with a young woman?s horrific experience after she made a terrible decision to dabble with a cult in one of Nigeria?s private universities.

I heard the story from a US-based relative who helps pay the student?s school fees. She had received a telephone call from Nigeria after the terrified student finally came forward to confide her woeful experience. The student in question, whom I shall name Miss I, had acquiesced to a friend?s suggestion to join a cult group on campus.

Miss I?s friend had painted a seductive picture of glory and power, even academic success, as some of the benefits of membership.

But the details that were left out of the picture is the gore, the physical lacerations, and the mental anguish that turned out to be the heart and soul of the experience. Miss I found out, to her horror, that initiation involved cuts and burns on her body as well as being compelled to engage in blood rites.

But even these proved innocuous compared to what came next. She and other female members became veritable sex slaves to the cult?s dominantly male leaders.

It was their duty that the female members, that is to be available to sate the male members depraved sex fantasies, including sessions of gang rapes. In addition, Miss I had to surrender her money to the cult. The leaders obtained the PIN to her account, granting them unfettered access to her cash.

If she needed to use her money for her own purposes, she was obligated to appeal to the men who had hijacked her account. In other words, her ability to use her own money was now at the discretion of her tormentors.

Needless to say, Miss I quickly realized that she had made a frightening choice. She would have made a hasty retreat, but she found out that was not a choice at all. The cult leadership drove it brutally home that turncoats risked horrendous consequences, including blood-curdling scarifications, rapes and even physical annihilation.

For months, Miss had lived her hell, too terrified to contemplate severing ties with the cult and too scared to tell her benefactors and the family that paid her school fees about her abominable experience. But last week, she could no longer abide her excruciating life. She came forward and confessed to those who pay her fees.

Her plea was simple: she could not afford to return to her university. Life there had become simply untenable. If she couldn?t transfer to another university, she was content to forego her education entirely. What made Miss I?s story particularly resonant for me is that I?ve known the young woman since she was a child. Her mother has served as a longtime cook for a relative?s family.

That?s why the family decided to take up the financial burden of paying the young woman?s education. Miss I?s experience drove home for me a certain moral crisis in Nigerian education.

Higher institutions in Nigeria, private as well as public, are plagued by cults that are nothing short of criminal enterprises. The worst of these cults are in the business of violence, sexual predation, and robbery. They have redefined the primary mission of institutions of higher learning from education to immersion in the technologies of crime.

The menace of cult-driven crimes compounds the cultural degradation of Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education. Already, these institutions and private as well as public are poorly funded, their libraries denuded of books, their labs bereft of equipment, their lecturers starved of research funds, as well as administrators who are minions of the powers-that-be.

There are other problems, including rogue lecturers who exchange grades for sex or cash, thereby ensuring that their institutions churn out graduates who flaunt in the words of a friend of mine, sexually transmitted degrees. Of course, the deplorable activities of cults mirror the malaise of the broader society. As a concept, Nigeria is mostly an experience steeped in violence.

In many ways, the institutions of the state, the police, customs, State Security Service, the military, and judiciary, treat Nigerians less as citizens than serfs. Law-abiding Nigerians often bear the harshest brunt of the violent, violence-spewing Nigerian state. The Nigerian environment, then, is a perfect fertilizer for cult groups that fester in academic settings.

These cults employ the same tactics and methods of a savaging state. In turn, these cults become breeding grounds for the kind of contemptible fools that are catapulted into positions of (mis)leadership in Nigeria. They assume these positions properly ?trained in the arts of hijacking public resources, raping their victims, and raising themselves to the status of godheads.

It all boils down to a bleak prognosis. At graduation, students are declared ?worthy in character and in learning? to be conferred with diplomas in their different fields.

But the cults in Nigeria?s academy compel us to wonder about the content of the character of our graduates and the quality of their learning. One shudders to behold students who are versed in the art of raping fellow students, enslaving others, and sowing terror in the hearts of their fellows.

And I fear that there?s little anybody can do to rein in these cults until there?s a broader, systemic reformation of the society. For these cults are, in the final reckoning, a symptom of a deformed, diseased society. ?Please follow me on twitter @ okeyndibe

The bin Laden Documents: How Did He Stay in Pakistan Unnoticed?

It has been a source of contention between the United States and Pakistan since the 2011 raid in which Navy SEALs killed Osama bin Laden: How could the world's most wanted fugitive hide in a country that was supposed to be committed to catching him? The relationship between the two nations was sour before the raid?U.S. authorities didn't notify Pakistan about the bin Laden raid for fear of alerting the target?and the humiliation of the armed action damaged the relationship even further.

"We think that there had to be some sort of support network for bin Laden inside of Pakistan," President Obama said in an interview on 60 Minutes shortly after the raid. The week after the raid, Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari said that Americans "have suggested that Pakistan lacked vitality in its pursuit of terrorism or, worse yet, that we were disingenuous and actually protected the terrorists we claimed to be pursuing. Such baseless speculation may make exciting cable news, but it doesn't reflect fact."

Two years later, more details about exactly how Pakistan could have missed bin Laden are coming to light. The Pakistani government formed a commission to study how bin Laden could have lived unnoticed in Pakistan. Within that report, newly leaked to Al Jazeera, are details about Abbottabad, the city where bin Laden was found, and the public officials who police it. The report concludes that gross incompetence led to the failure to detect bin Laden. But there is also plenty of fodder indicating that local law enforcement were content to leave the strange building and its unseen occupants alone despite some prominent red flags, while it seems Pakistan's national intelligence agencies ignored the signs the al-Qaida leader was present.

There are no smoking guns here. But there are some revelations that the commission investigators say stretch credibility?even in as dysfunctional a state as Pakistan.

The Terrorist's Neighborhood

The picture of Abbottabad that emerged in the media just after the raid showed a city that was home to a significant military base, and the idea of bin Laden hiding near Pakistan's "West Point" was galling. But the report describes another side of the city, one that was a haven for militants.

Abbottabad is located near the border of the contentious Federally Administered Tribal Areas, home to many violent militant groups and the scene of sporadic Pakistani military efforts to roust them. Local media told the Commission "that while Abbottabad was a peaceful area, in recent years a large number of outsiders had settled there for various reasons. Militants were rumored to have brought their families after being displaced by military operations." In fact, the report mentions the fact that many militants' families lived there as a reason the area was considered safe from terrorism.

Pakistani law enforcement knew about this militant population. The regional police inspector general told the Pakistani commission that "more than 200 persons were under surveillance but the OBL compound and its residents were not among them. (There seems to have been the assumption that militants would only rent but not buy property.)"

The Pakistanis seemed content to refrain from connecting any dots. "The civilian provincial administration were out of the loop despite their clear responsibilities," the report states. "Their role in counter-terrorism was at best marginal, and in tracking OBL it was precisely zero."

Building a Fort in Plain Sight

The Pakistani government does not allow foreigners to own land in Abbottabad. Still, bin Laden associates and brothers Ibrahim and Abrar al-Kuwaiti were able to purchase the land where the built-to-spec compound sat. They used outdated National Identity Cards to buy the land, despite the fact that those cards were replaced by more advanced, computerized identification. Authorities made no inquiry into the buyers' backgrounds, even when the home violated local construction rules. These violations were suspicious?tall walls (topped with barbed wire) that violated ordinances, a failure to pay any taxes, the illegal construction of a third floor, and the routing of four gas/electric lines into a house supposedly housing two families.

"There were multiple oversights and violations of laid-down procedures on such a scale that, even allowing for the general deterioration in administration and oversight standards, it still appeared to be more than just a case of negligence," the report's authors state. "Either OBL was extremely fortunate to not run into anyone committed to doing his job honestly or there was a complete collapse of local governance."

Someone successfully evading the world's intelligence agencies doesn't count on that kind of luck.

It might be unfair to expect building inspectors and local police to identify the terrorist compound. But the report notes that the national spy agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence, never told local officials what suspicious activity to look for?an odd oversight considering the influx of militants to the city. Even worse, "the OBL compound was located a short distance from the local ISI office, suggesting that the ISI's curiosity should have been aroused."

The report sums up: "How the entire neighborhood, local officials, police, security and intelligence officials missed the size, shape, the barbed wire, the lack of visitors over a period of nearly six years beggars belief."

The Case of Umar Patek

In 2002, Umar Patek, as a member of an al-Qaida-linked terrorist group in Indonesia, helped to build and plant a bomb in Bali that killed 202 people. He was caught in January 2011?in Abbottabad. What was he doing there? He claimed to be on his way to Afghanistan to fight Americans, but the committee calls this claim far-fetched because the city is not well-positioned to be part of any jihadi transportation pipeline into Afghanistan (there are plenty of easier ways to get there).

"It was very likely that his al-Qaida support network had contact with the al-Qaida network of support for OBL," the report states. "The local ISI did not probe this possibility, although it had been tracking al-Qaida in the area for at least two years. During this time it did not solicit the cooperation of civil administration including police. The interrogation of Umar Patek's network members should have turned up actionable information."

If Patek had wanted to meet bin Laden himself, then the Bali bomber might have been out of luck. Members of the household said bin Laden did not meet with al-Qaida operatives out of security concerns. Nevertheless, Patek's presence in Abbottabad raised the eyebrows of the commission authors. "It would seem very likely that Patek, despite his denial, had come to seek instructions or inspiration from OBL," they say. "If so, it shows Patek knew where to look for him."

The ISI investigators had first crack at Patek, but the commission said it accepted his scenic-trip-to-Afghanistan story. Indonesia extradited Patek and he's now serving 20 years in prison.

Patek's presence in Abbottabad was not the only sign of an al-Qaida network in the city. The report bluntly states: "The disconnect between the civilian and intelligence administrations seems to have been complete: The civilians [were] by and large unaware of the extent to which the Abbottabad area was penetrated by militants including al-Qaida, and the local ISI [was] well aware of their presence but unwilling to share information that might have made the whole counter-terrorism effort, including the search for OBL, more effective."

The report never says the ISI turned a blind eye to al-Qaida in Abbottabad. But it certainly provides some tantalizing clues, leaving the reader to assume one of two things. One, the ISI (despite its reputation) is grossly incompetent. Or, two, that elements within the agency allowed the world's most wanted man to shelter in Pakistan. Either way it's bad news, considering the ongoing effort to eliminate terrorists (by drone attacks) in Pakistan. Without reliable partners, counterterrorism efforts fail.

B.C. racewalkers unite for Canada's first medal at Summer Universiade

Canada earned its first medal at the 27th Summer Universiade Tuesday in Kazan, Russia.

Richmond?s Evan Dunfee teamed with fellow B.C. athletes Inaki Gomez and Ben Thorne to win bronze in the 20-kilometre race walk. Their combined third-place time of four hours, 20 minutes and 35 seconds left them behind only Russia (4:04:31) and Ukraine (4:08:09).

Like his teammates, Dunfee was happy with the medal but also called the result bittersweet.

?It?s great to win a medal but right now it?s hard for me to truly appreciate it because I?m pretty disappointed with my individual result,? said Dunfee, who also earned his second caution near the midway point of the race. ?I felt so good today, possibly the best I?ve ever felt at the 10km mark. But like Ben, I knew I had to shut it down for the team.?

The trio will be back in Russia next month for the IAAF world athletics championships in Moscow (Aug. 10 to 18). Gomez and Thorne will compete in the 20km, while Dunfee qualified for the 50km event.

Firing because you suspect thievery: Better be prepared to prove it ...

Employees who steal from their employers violate their duty of loyalty. That makes them ineligible for unemployment compensation. That?s true even if the theft is small.

But you must be prepared with clear testimony if you want to contest the worker?s right to unemployment benefits.

Recent case: Misty worked for a bar as a manager, and also tended bar. Her supervisor never suspected she was anything but loyal and trustworthy until a customer told him he saw Misty take a $20 bill out of the cash register and put it in the tip jar. He fired her for theft, even though she denied taking the money.

At the unemployment compensation hearing, the customer refused to testify. Instead, the supervisor recounted what the customer (who had admittedly been drinking) had told him.

That wasn?t good enough for the court. It refused to consider the indirect hearsay testimony, even coming up with several alternative explanations for what the supervisor said the customer saw. It ordered the payment of benefits. (Eystad v. RKT Food and Fun, et al., No. A12-1511, Court of Appeals of Minnesota, 2013)

Final note: Remember, falsely accusing someone of theft can have other consequences, especially if the information is made public. Never tell anyone but those who need to know why you terminated an employee. Don?t make an example of her. Don?t make the accusation in public. Doing so opens you up to a defamation lawsuit.

Outbound calls from desktop Gmail are back, with free calling to the US and Canada

Image

Today Google has brought back the ability to make phone calls from desktop Gmail, Google+ and via its Chrome extension, and also announced that calls to the US and Canada are free (from countries where Hangouts calling is available. The feature disappeared when Google introduced its new Hangouts setup, but a post on the Gmail blog claims that now it's better than ever. According to the company, "Hangouts is designed to be the future of Google Voice," with making and receiving calls just the beginning. For now, users can enjoy new features like adding multiple phone numbers and video participants to the same call, and using sound effects from the Google Effects app. Current Hangouts users should see a new phone icon in Gmail, or a "call a phone" menu item in Google+ and the Chrome extension.

For women: What's your personal health and fitness story?

Below are the raw, unvarnished stories from our actual clients, describing why they sought our help.

(Turns out, everyone struggles with food. Everyone thinks they?re crazy. And everyone thinks they?re the only one. No, it?s not just you.)

+++

It?s often hard to find your own story?reflected in the fitness media; where it?s all beauty pageants, decimating body fat, and uncovering washboard abs.

At Precision Nutrition, we take a different approach.

Instead of foisting some fat-hating, ab-loving ideal on everyone, we actually talk to our clients.

By interviewing them, asking questions, and really listening, we learn their stories. Who they are and what they really want.

In these interviews, one question always leads the way:

?Why are you here, working with Precision Nutrition??

We hear many different ? and sometimes?surprising ? answers. And, today,?I?ll share them with you.

These are short, paraphrased summaries of the hurt, the struggles and even the seemingly unspeakable thoughts of the women in our Lean Eating coaching program.

So many of our clients think they?re the only ones who feel these things.?They wonder whether they?re crazy to have these thoughts.

Why can?t I manage this, when everyone else seems to do it just fine?

But the people we assume are perfect: they?ve got their own struggles.

Just remember, these are raw, true, authentic emotions, paraphrased from the real responses we get from our clients.

They?re what people share when they?re ready to admit they need a change.

We share them because it?s important to know you?re not the only one. We share them because there?s something beautiful about being open, honest, and finally asking for the help you need.

Why are you here?

Story 1: Somewhere along the way? I woke up fat.

I wasn?t fat growing up. I was fit. But something happened to me.

I don?t know when or where it happened. I?m not even completely sure what it was. But the weight crept up on me.

It makes me so unhappy to see what I?ve become.

Story 2: I feel powerless.

I want to take charge of my life. But something is in my way.

I can?t seem to meet a good partner / find a good job / get a great apartment / figure out how to include fitness as part of my everyday life.

Other people seem to manage this. How?

The time slips away from me. Where does it go?

Story 3: I feel doomed.

I?ve given up. I?ve tried so many diets and programs. And nothing works.

I feel like I?m getting fatter and fatter and nothing seems to be stopping me.

What?s the point of trying?

Story 4: I hurt.

My ___ hurts. My ___ hurts. Even my damn ___ hurts!

How can I possibly exercise when I feel this way?

And how can I give up my favorite foods? Food is the only comfort I know.

Story 5: First I?m ?good.? Then I?m ?bad.?

I try to be ?good,? but it?s so hard. It makes me feel deprived.

Where?s the joy, the juice, if you have to give everything up?

I don?t want to live like some kind of monk. So eventually, I rebel.

And then I feel bad. Really bad.

Story 6: The wheels come off the bus.

I eat normally in front of others. But when I?m alone, I can go a little crazy.

I?ve never really told anybody before, but sometimes I even binge. My eating gets totally out of control.

I?m so ashamed. I need to talk to somebody about this.

Story 7: I know it, but I can?t do it.

I?m smart. I?m educated.

I know how to eat healthy and/or exercise, but I can?t seem to stick with it.

I?ll get started, and do really well for a couple of weeks, and then it all falls apart.

Am I the only person this happens to? What?s wrong with me?

Story 8: Waiting for the perfect moment.

School. Work. Kids. My wedding. Travel.

Life?s so full and busy and there?s always something in my way.

I keep waiting for the perfect time to get in shape, but the perfect time never comes.

And I?m beginning to wonder if it ever will.

Story 9: I really want to be part of the hardcore badass? / ?living pure? club, but I am scared I don?t belong.

I?m very much into Paleo, but I had a hard time sticking to it as soon as?

I?d like to become fully vegan but?

I?m hoping to compete in triathlon / marathons / Crossfit. But it seems so out of reach for me.

Jeez, it looks so easy for those women to be effortlessly lean and fit.

What the heck is wrong with me?

Story 10: Aging sucks.

Nobody told me that middle age would be so hard!

Peri-menopause. Menopause. Hormones. Arthritis. Gravity.

What happened to my boobs? What happened to my butt? What happened to my energy?

And what?s next? Is it really all downhill from here?

I don?t want to feel like this for the rest of my life.

Story 11: I used to be? who am I now?

I used to be an athlete / a size 2 / full of energy.

But ever since I had kids / got this crazy job / got married / got divorced, I haven?t felt like myself.

I wish I could just turn back the clock and be the person I used to be.

I don?t even recognize myself any more. Who am I?

Story 12: It?s complicated.

I have so many food allergies or intolerances. It?s so difficult to eat nutritiously and lose weight.

I suffer from some chronic medical issues. I am afraid that no program would be able to help me deal with those.

Fitness programs are for people who are healthy, not people like me.

Story 13: It?s complicated (Version 2).

My living arrangements are so confusing.

I live with three roommates / my family / my crazy parents / my pets.

I?m not sure how to cope with all of that and focus on fitness, too.

My fridge and my cupboards are not my own.

Story 14: It?s complicated (Version 3).

My life is nuts. I can?t even count the things that have gone wrong.

I?m coping with so much stress, all the time.

How can I add yet another complication?

But still? even with all that? I really want to try.

Story 15: I?m busy and I don?t have time.

What with the kids / shift work / demanding career / care of aging parents / grandparents / my volunteer work / my dog, plus the housework / gardening / commuting?

?not to mention the hobbies, and the conferences, and the social life.

I don?t have time for anything else.

I?d like to find a way to regain my health and fitness. But there are only 24 hours in a day!

Story 16: I?m a freak.

I feel like I?m the only one who suffers from this disease / injury / eating behavior.

I?m weird, and nobody understands me.

Nobody.

Story 17: I?ve never liked my body.

I hate my legs / boobs / butt / belly / muffin top.

I wish I didn?t have this mesomorph frame.

I have peasant genes.

Why am I so short / tall?

I don?t like being pear-shaped.

Other people have perfect bodies.

Why can?t I look like those people?

Why can?t I accept myself?

Story 18: Exercise worked, until it didn?t.

I like working out. Heck, I used to over-exercise.

Now it?s getting me nowhere.

I?m gaining fat even though I am eating less!

And nobody believes me.

Story 19: I?ve tried everything.

Some stuff worked. Some didn?t.

It didn?t seem to matter. Because it didn?t work for long.

I couldn?t sustain it.

Here I am, still the same as before. Maybe even worse.

Story 20: I?m frustrated.

I did everything ?right!?

I did what I was supposed to do!

This has all been a lie!

Story 21: I?m overwhelmed. It?s too much.

I read all the literature on fitness and weight loss and nutrition.

It?s just overwhelming and confusing. Enough already!

Story 22: I?m overwhelmed. It?s too much (Variation 2).

I try to juggle all my responsibilities and just end up crashing.

Story 23: I?m overwhelmed. It?s too much (Variation 3).

I don?t know how to cook, and learning how just seems impossible.

I know I can never get healthy unless I figure out what to do in the kitchen.

How come everybody else seems to manage?

There must be something wrong with me.

Story 24: I don?t feel sexy.

I don?t want to have sex.

Other people don?t want to have sex with me.

And even if they do, I can?t believe them.

I ask my husband to turn out the lights.

Story 25: I?m sick and tired of being sick and tired.

I?m tired all the time.

Worn to the bone.

I feel like crap.

Is this the best I can expect from life?

Story 26: I?m a walking pharmacy.

I want to get off all these medications.

I want to know what it feels like to face the day without them. I?m not even sure they?re helping me any more.

Is that a drug reaction, or is that just normal for someone with my health condition?

Story 27: I?m a road warrior.

I travel all the time.

It?s hard to maintain healthy routines when you?re always on the road.

I live in a foreign country where they eat strange stuff and I can?t get fresh vegetables or find a decent gym.

Story 28: I?m isolated and alone.

I?m a military wife. A single mom. An exchange student.

I don?t know anyone else who is into eating healthy. No one!

I don?t know anybody who actually exercises.

I don?t know any other strong / sane women.

Withdrawing is less painful than reaching out. In the past, I?ve always been rejected anyway.

I?ve always had to do everything on my own. Nobody has ever helped me with anything.

I can?t believe it?s okay to ask for support.

Story 29: Had a baby, and?

My body went south.

I just couldn?t get my weight back to where it was before.

With the late night feedings and the sleep deprivation, I?m a mess.

I hate those ?after? photos of celebrity moms. I don?t have a personal trainer!

Story 30: My family helps.

I want to be a good role model for my kids.

My kids are my motivation for getting into better shape.

I want to have the energy to play with my grandchildren.

I don?t want to die young, before my kids grow up.

Story 31: My family hinders.

It?s hard to convince everyone else in my household to eat better.

My husband keeps buying junk and I always break down and eat some.

My kids give me such an argument if I try to change our diet.

I struggle to make myself a priority.

I?m always putting other people?s needs ahead of my own.

It?s selfish to focus on myself.

Story 32: Hormones.

I?m dealing with thyroid / adrenal problems.

Peri-menopause. Menopause.

Birth control and HRT.

IVF and fertility treatments.

Everybody knows this makes it really, really, really hard to lose weight or get into better shape.

Story 33: I?m so ashamed.

Nothing fits me.

I won?t let anyone take photos.

I don?t even want to leave the house.

Story 34: I fail at rules.

I just wanted someone to tell me what to do? but I didn?t want more rules?

But right now, rules are all I know? but rules didn?t work.

What can I do, where can I turn, how can I get control over this situation?

Story 35: F*** that guy.

My husband can eat whatever he wants! He never gains weight.

It?s not fair!

And he keeps all his goodies in the house.

I can?t keep eating like he does!

Story 36: F*** that guy (Variation 2).

I just kicked that no-good loser to the curb.

I?m ready to bust it out and bring sexy back.

I just need to lose a few pounds first.

Story 37: I?m a fraud.

I?m a fitness pro. Why can?t I be lean?

I feel like an imposter and a charlatan.

I?ll bet my clients are laughing at me. No wonder they don?t listen to me.

I want to be a fitness pro, but I can?t ? not in this body.

Who would ever hire me?

Story 38: I?ve punched my card. It?s time to take care of ME.

The kids are gone, or more independent.

Work is settling down. I?ve just retired.

My husband is over his health difficulties or his job stress.

I have fewer responsibilities. Things are running smoothly.

Now it?s my time. I?m ready!

So, how did these stories end?

We hate to spoil the secret plot twist at the end?

But all of these people went on to succeed in our Lean Eating coaching program.

The Army's Insurgent Tracking Software Is Now Being Used to Track Gangs

The Army's Insurgent Tracking Software Is Now Being Used to Track Gangs

We all know that social media is the criminal's worst enemy. But this summer, a group of MIT researchers are collaborating with police to test software that can reliably predict whether a person is part of a gang based on their social networks, building on similar software used to track insurgents in Afghanistan.

For the past decade or so, the Army has used a number of similar pieces of software to visualize the relationships between suspected and known insurgents involved with the development of improvised explosive devices. It works by grouping many individuals by levels of association?and by doing so, gives researchers a way to recognize system-wide patterns and predict who might be involved in a particular operation.

The Army's Insurgent Tracking Software Is Now Being Used to Track Gangs

According to MIT's Technology Review, there are plenty of sociological similarities between insurgents and American street gangs. "In the last 10 years or so, researchers have revolutionised the way military analysts think about insurgency and the groups of people involved in it," explains the Review. "Their key insight is that insurgency tends to run in families and in social networks that are held together by common beliefs."

So it makes sense that the insights gleaned by Army intelligence could help out police officers at home. That hunch was confirmed on June 28th, when a group of MIT researchers published a paper in Physics and Society that details how a similar software is being used to track gang violence.

The software is called Organizational, Relationship, and Contact Analyzer, or ORCA, and it groups people in a particular community by their known relationships, as well as their arrest records. Based on the algorithm, they can predict whether a particular person is likely to be a gang member; It's also able to map "corner crews," which operate hyper-locally, and "seed sets," or individuals who are highly influential.

For this particular study, ORCA was tested on a three-year history of 5,400 arrests. Based on those numbers, it revealed 11,000 relationships, created a network map of 468 members belonging to about 20 gangs. The analysis is continuing through this summer in a "major metropolitan area," though they won't name which one. Eventually, the software could become ubiquitous in police stations nation-wide. It seems that crime, just like business, all comes down to relationships. [Technology Review]

Brock Motum's NBA?dreams have taken the Aussie big man from?Pullman to Washington D.C. and all over the country in recent weeks.

The former Washington?St. All Pac-12 forward has been fine-tuning his game in D.C., but Wednesday he was in Charlotte for a workout with the Bobcats. His workout schedule has also included stops in Philadelphia, Houston, Boston, Chicago and Washington D.C. He says there are two more workouts planned before the Draft.

Of the teams he has worked out for, Motum says there are a few he thinks would be a good fit.

Motum's aim has been to show off his three-point range, something he's been keying on since his?WSU career ended. He believes being a "stretch four" could be his calling card, at least early on in the NBA.

The 2013 NBA?Draft takes place in?New York City June 27th. Motum says he may head to NYC for the event, so that he can take the stage and shake the commissioner's hand if he gets his name called.

Hundreds compete in dragon boats to support breast cancer care

LA CROSSE, Wis. -

A new addition to Riverfest took place Saturday.

The Big Blue Dragon Boat races is sponsored by Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse.

La Crosse Mayor Tim Kabat and Viterbo's director of global education painted the eyes of a dragon display to officially mark the start of the event.

Proceeds from the event will go to support Mayo's Center for Breast Cancer.

Organizers were hoping for at least 20 teams to race Saturday, but ended up having 30 for a total of 600 participants.

"It tells (us) that our community is exceptionally supportive of all of these wonderful events that go on, especially to support a good cause, and we really live in a community that really embraces wellness, and I think this really appeals to a lot of different individuals," said Lori Freit-Hammes, co-chair of the event.

Dragon boat racing dates back thousands of years and has now somewhat become known as a way for breast cancer survivors to band together and promote their physical health.

Among the participants were a couple dozen breast cancer survivors.

For the survivors racing, it's not so much about winning or losing. It's about coming together and supporting each other.

They said "survivor" is a proud nine letter word to live by.

"I think that it's changed me, but I think it's changed me in a really positive way," said Susan Hessel of La Crosse.

Hessel has been a survivor for about five years now.

"I'm a breast cancer survivor from 2009," said Hessel. "I had chemotherapy, I had radiation, I had the kitchen sink -- surgery -- and I did well."

She's on the Crews in Blue Breast crew 1 team. It's one of two dragon boat racing teams filled with breast cancer survivors and supporters.

"One of the things that's really important is to show that there is life after breast cancer," said Hessel.

Hessel has never tried dragon boat racing, but she said the race is much like her battle with breast cancer.

"You've just gotta keep on trucking one foot in front of the other or one paddle moving in the water," said Hessel.

With a steady drum beat and one paddle stoke at a time, she and her team made it to the finish line, proving that together, they can accomplish anything.

"It's just great being part of a group and being part of camaraderie, and showing what we can do instead of being afraid because we can't do something," said Hessel.

The breast cancer survivors were also honored in a special ceremony Saturday.

Each survivor received two pink carnations -- one for them and one in memory of someone else.

The survivors then placed the flowers onto the Mississippi in honor everyone that has been affected by the disease.

Participants also raised their paddles to form a tunnel and gave a high-five to the survivors as they passed through.

In case you were wondering breast cancer survivors finished third in their division.

Your Next Smartphone Screen Will Be Able to Disinfect Itself

Your Next Smartphone Screen Will Be Able to Disinfect Itself

Your phone is filthy. Anything that's getting rubbed by your grimy little fingers on a ridiculously regular basis is going to be far from pristine. But Corning can help. Its newest revision of Gorilla Glass is not only ridiculously resilient, it also kills pesky germs all by itself.

Corning discussed its upcoming display tech at the MIT Mobile Technology Summit, and it sounds incredible. The anti-microbial coating being used on the new glass?a first for the display industry?can kill virtually all nasty microbes on the screen's surface over a course of two hours. It's not instantaneous, but it's way better than having a pocket petri dish.

And that's not all, either. Corning is also whipping up a new transparency treatment that will make the next revision of Gorilla Glass tens of times more transparent than purified water. What's that really mean? Seeing your phone in broad daylight is about to get way easier. Here's what that improvement looks like, the circle in the center is the new stuff:

Your Next Smartphone Screen Will Be Able to Disinfect Itself

And of course, that's all on top of the ridiculous strength we've come to expect from Gorilla Glass. Unfortunately, there's no word on exactly when these sort of features will be rolling out to new devices; Corning has simply said some time in the next two years. Until then, licking your phone screen is probably a good habit to stay out of. [Technology Review via Phone Arena via Talk Android]

Government Challenge: Petition - What is definition of healthy ...

July 4, 2013

London,UK (RPRN) 07/04/13 ? VegfestUK has been campaigning for a healthier, more ethical and sustainable UK for over 10 years now. Through VegfestUK festivals in London, Brighton and Bristol, the 10th Anniversary VegfestUK Awards and the 10th Anniversary Healthy Vegan Recipe Competition , ?Vegfest UK continues to make a difference to thousands of people?s lives. However they say there?s more to be done.

VegfestUK Director, Tim Barford (winner of a 2013 PEA award ) says ?Whist people and animals are suffering and dying unnecessarily just because of the human predilection for animal foods and sugar, and whilst the planet?s delicate environmental balance is under threat, we cannot stop campaigning . It would be irresponsible to stop?

The Vegfest UK consultant nutritionist Yvonne Bishop-Weston from Foods for Life Nutrition and Health is working with Vegfest UK ?to address a problem that personifies a key underlying cultural issue in Britain. It?s a problem that is relatively easy to fix (because technically it breaks trading standards law), but better than that provides a vehicle and platform? to raise the UK profile of a healthier, more ethical and sustainable vegan lifestyle that is the most obvious solution.

The Vegfest UK collective hope they can change the culture of apathy, ignorance and general contempt for vegetarian and vegan diets, even by some leading dieticians and nutritionists.

?Big companies routinely claim their junk food is healthy ?as part of a balanced calorie controlled diet?. Some food manufacturers and caterers are going a step further , claiming a plate of chips and sausages is healthy if it has a portion of peas or beans with it. One national retailer is even advertising this type of food, served with chocolate ice cream and sugary drinks, as ?healthy meals for kids?. Who can blame them, even the NHS cheerlead junk food by hosting Burger King restaurants in hospitals? points out Yvonne.

Generally the Government?s advice is to encourage ?self-regulation? and unfortunately there is a reticence amongst Trading Standards officers to tackle a national company rather than a local independent business.

Tim Barford director of VegfestUK? says ?We came up with the idea of a petition to the Government because if we get 100,000 signatures then it has to be discussed in parliament. If a legal or advisory definition of ?healthy? gets discussed then they have to look at the research.? If they look at the research then it overwhelmingly points to a plant based diet?

Yvonne agrees, ?The evidence on reducing the risks of preventative chronic disease clearly points to ?a plant based diet but the Government experts need to work it out for themselves. Eventually, if they do it scientifically and factually, using the latest research, they?ll struggle not back themselves into a plant based corner. ?

Jeter to start rehab assignment

NEW YORK (AP) ? The captain is ready to test his twice broken ankle.

Derek Jeter will start a rehabilitation assignment Saturday with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the first step toward returning to the New York Yankees. He is scheduled to play at least five innings at shortstop.

Whether he will be able to don his pinstripes before the All-Star break is to be seen.

"I think he has to feel comfortable playing," manager Joe Girardi said Friday. "He really hasn't had a whole lot of at-bats. He has not played a whole lot of infield. So (we need to see him) being able to go back-to-back days, back-to-back-to-back days that sort of thing."

Jeter joins third baseman Alex Rodriguez in the minor leagues. Jeter is starting with the Yankees' top minor league club because he appears to be further along than A-Rod, who has played two games for Class A Charleston and is is hitless in his first four at-bats.

Rodriguez's game Friday with the Tampa Yankees, a high-A club, was postponed by rain. He has said he thinks he will need the full 20 days allowed for a rehab assignment to prepare to play after having left hip surgery in January.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman would not commit to seeing either player back before the break that begins July 15.

"Those guys will be ready when they're ready," Cashman said. "That's it."

Jeter broke his ankle in the opener of the AL championship series on Oct. 13 and had surgery soon after. The player who rarely concedes he's injured vowed to return for opening day but he only played five spring training games because of soreness in the foot. A new break was discovered on April 18.

On Friday at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fla., Jeter took six simulated at-bats against minor league pitchers and ran the bases after putting the ball in play. He also did one of his signature jump throws to first after fielding a grounder in the hole during defensive drills.

Five players have started at shortstop in Jeter's absence, and Robinson Cano is looking forward to some stability there with the return of the 13-time All-Star.

"We all know what kind of guy he is and what energy he brings to the team," Cano said. "Not only that ? also young players to myself the way he gives good advice, and everybody just looks to him. That's all we want. We want our guy here and he's our shortstop."

The Yankees infielder who might be closest to a return is Eduardo Nunez. He started 26 games at shortstop before going out with a left oblique strain June 6. Nunez played for Double-A Trenton on Thursday and was 0 for 5. In five rehab games, he is 3 for 13 with two runs and two stolen bases.

"He's played this year and he's has spring training," Girardi said, comparing Nunez to Jeter and Rodriguez.

Also, Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda said his hip flexor feels OK and that he was cleared to throw a bullpen session Friday.

Prosecutors wrapping up case in Zimmerman trial

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) ? Two weeks and about three dozen witnesses later, prosecutors are about to rest their case in George Zimmerman's second-degree murder trial in central Florida.

The prosecution was expected to wrap up their questioning of witnesses Friday ? although they still may call Trayvon Martin's parents to testify. The parents have said it's their 17-year-old son screaming for help on 911 calls recorded during a fight the unarmed teen had with Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, last year before Zimmerman fatally shot him.

Zimmerman's father has said it is his son. The screams are crucial pieces of evidence because they could determine who the aggressor was in the confrontation.

Zimmerman's attorneys will start their case after the prosecution rests.

Zimmerman is pleading not guilty, claiming self-defense.

Is It OK to Talk on Your Phone When You're at the Checkout?

The UK media is weirdly ablaze this morning over a story about a store attendant who flipped out when a customer refused to stop talking on her phone while at the checkout. But is that rude, or is it now socially acceptable?

According to the customer, a 26-year-old Jo Clarke, the store assistant barked ?I will not check your shopping out until you get off your mobile phone." It could be argued that both of them were being a little rude, but whose side are you on? [Gizmodo UK]

USA network brings Anywhere Plus app to iTunes with cableless viewing for some shows

Like many, many (many) other programmers, NBC Universal's USA Network has had its own iOS app, USA Anywhere, for quite some time. However, users have been disappointed with the lack of past episode availability, among other foibles, so USA has just taken the wraps off a new app called Anywhere Plus, available for free on iTunes. You'll now be able to watch all its programs a day after they air and back episodes for certain shows, assuming you're signed up for the network with a cable provider. Even if you're not, selected episodes are now available along with behind-the-scenes clips, interviews and the like. C Spire's Galaxy S3 4.1.2 Premium Suite update begins July 3

Premium Suite

The Premium Suite features make the 4.1.2 update into something worth waiting for

Starting sometime on July 3, users with a Samsung Galaxy S3 on the C Spire network should start seeing that oh-so-wonderful OTA pop-up we all cherish. The carrier is sending out the Android 4.1.2 update, including the Premium Suite features that we've seen in other Galaxy S3 models.

While an update to Jelly Bean is great in and of its own, the Premium Suite brings a good many new features to the device. Updates for previous models have included things like smart photo tagging, reader mode, S-Beam enhancements, and the crowd favorite multi-window view.

Samsung and C Spire have also made the update available online via Kies, so if you'd prefer not to wait you can use the Samsung utility to download and install this one -- though that often comes with its own unpleasant experience.

If you're a C Spire customer with a Galaxy S3, start paying attention to your notifications in a few short hours. If and when you receive the update, be sure to sound off in the comment box and let everyone know what you think.

Farmers Discover Rare Meteorite in Minnesota Corn Field

For 40 years, University of Minnesota professor Calvin Alexander has been contacted by people who think they've found meteorites. They call, write, and come in to the lab of the curator of meteorites with rocks they think, or hope, are from outer space. Over four decades, Alexander has seen about 5,000 "meteorwrongs" that turn out to be regular Earth rocks. Until now.

In April, Alexander was contacted by farmers Bruce and Nelva Lilienthal, who sent the professor photos of a peculiar stone they'd found a couple years ago while clearing their corn field in Arlington, Minn.

The rock, which is about 16 inches by 12 inches (40.6 centimeters by 30.5 cm) across, and about 2 inches (5 cm) thick, weighs a surprising 33 pounds (15 kg) ? about three times more than a regular Earth rock of that size. Its weight, as well as its unusual flattened shape and rusty surface, immediately suggested it was special. "I said, 'That certainly looks like a meteorite, but I need to see it up close to tell for sure,'" Alexander recalled. [Gallery: See photos of the Lilienthals' meteorite]

On May 30, the couple brought their find to Alexander's lab and allowed him to chip 0.02 ounces (0.6 grams) off the edge of it for analysis under a scanning electron microscope. The rock was iron, and contained about 8 percent nickel ? a telltale giveaway. Iron objects on Earth contain almost no nickel, but iron rocks from space are usually between 5 and 20 percent nickel. The microscope also revealed what's called a Widmanst?tten pattern of nickel-iron crystals that's unique to meteorites.

To say that the revelation was welcome news would be a major understatement.

"I am about to retire at the end of next year, and this was the first real meteorite that's been brought in," Alexander told SPACE.com. "Yes, ma'am, I was excited. I am still excited."

Though they haven't spent decades waiting for something like this, the Lilienthals are coming to appreciate their find just as much.

"It's not something we were expecting to find, but now that we've found out what it is, it's been exciting to learn about it," said Nelva Lilienthal.

Her husband Bruce had come upon the rock two years ago during the annual spring field clearing, when the farmers comb over their land to pick up the many rocks that have been turned up from the frost over the winter.

"You pick up hundreds and hundreds of rocks," Bruce Lilienthal said. "You pick 'em up and you get your fields planted. When we found it, we thought it was kind of different and we put it aside."

The couple noticed the rock's unsettling weight and rare appearance, but didn't think too much of it at the time, and added it to their pile of interesting finds.

"At that point it was time to plant our fields again and we put it off until a rainy day," Nelva said.

Recently, they revisited the issue, and their son, who works for the University of Minnesota, made some inquiries at the school and was referred to Alexander.

Since the discovery of the rock's true nature, the object has taken on more importance.

"It's probably not the prettiest rock that we've got in the pile ? it looks kind of like a burnt pizza ? but I'm really liking it more," Nelva told SPACE.com. "With all this publicity, it's becoming a favorite."

The future for the space rock is unclear right now. Because it fell on the Lilienthals' property, it legally belongs to them. They may decide to hold onto their meteorite as a prized keepsake, or they may not.

"It's a novelty right now," Bruce said. "The university wants to do more tests on it, so we'll let them do more tests and then we'll decide if we want to sell it or keep it."

Alexander would love to be able to study the rock in detail. He's reasonably sure that the object is another piece of a meteorite that was found in a nearby field in Arlington in 1894 ? the two rocks have similar shapes and nickel content. But to tell for sure, a larger chunk of the object would have to be cut off and examined.

The meteorite offers some tantalizing scientific possibilities, Alexander said. For one thing, he'd like to compare the weathering and rusting on the surface of this rock to the 1984 meteorite, which was buried for about 100 years less time before being found.

The meteorite also appears to belong to a rare class of non-magnetic meteorites that originated in melt pools on asteroids created by impacts of other rocks. Additionally, its flattened shape is rare, as most meteorites are roughly spherical.

"Both of those factors mean that it's potentially very scientifically interesting," Alexander said.

The Lilienthals, meanwhile, have a newfound interest in the rocks that turn up in their fields. If their meteorite is related to the 1894 find, it stands to reason there could be more fragments of the same meteorite out there.

"It's very possible there's some in there still underground, still in the field," Bruce Lilienthal said. At the very least, it's made their annual rock-picking-up duty a little bit more exciting, he said.
