NASA's newest Mars rover, Curiosity, has snapped photos of rocky outcroppings that jut out from the alien soil, and scientists say they look like the remnants of an ancient stream bed where water once flowed on the surface of the red planet.

The exposed rocks look like broken slabs of cement sidewalk, about four inches thick, and they are made of rounded bits of gravel in a sandy matrix. The rock has eroded a little bit, and some of the smooth pebbles -? about the size of M&M candies ? have fallen down into a little pile.

Scientists looked at all this, and came to this conclusion: "This is a rock that was formed in the presence of water," says John Grotzinger, project scientist for the mission at the California Institute of Technology.

And not just any water, but a flowing stream.

Scientists have believed for a long time that Mars once had liquid water on its surface. Orbiting spacecraft can see canyons that must have been carved by water. In fact, researchers deliberately picked Curiosity's landing site because it looked like a place where a canyon stream had spilled water onto a plain ? and now it looks like they were right.

Before, we never really saw a rock on Mars where we could tell whether it was wind or water that was doing the transport. And now we have a clear sign of flowing water on Mars and we can get estimates of the size of the flow and so on. It's really fascinating.

Jim Bell, a planetary scientist at Arizona State University who is working on this mission, says the rounded pebbles and cemented sandstones look like what you would find if you were "walking up a stream in your favorite little canyon somewhere. These are all telling us that there was water really flowing across the surface there, and probably pretty deep water ? ankle-deep, knee-deep water ? like you'd have in an occasional desert flood on the Earth, in the Southwest, for example."

Other researchers agree that this is convincing evidence of flowing water. Peter Doran, at the University of Illinois at Chicago, says the rounded grains in that rock are big enough that they couldn't have been carried and smoothed by the wind.

"Before, we never really saw a rock on Mars where we could tell whether it was wind or water that was doing the transport," Doran says. "And now we have a clear sign of flowing water on Mars and we can get estimates of the size of the flow and so on. It's really fascinating."

Other Mars rovers have seen some evidence of water, but nothing like this. Andrew Knoll, a planetary sciences professor at Harvard University, says earlier rovers saw things that could be associated with groundwater that might occasionally bubble up -? not the kind of flowing surface water that made these newly discovered rocks.

"Something happened on Mars that simply doesn't happen today," Knoll says. "And that is, there was water flowing at high rates over the Martian surface. That's really what they've found."

Water is important, of course, because it's needed for life. And Curiosity's main mission is to search for evidence that Mars was once capable of supporting life. Its mission is expected to last about two years.

Doctors don't always address high blood pressure

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Doctors sometimes miss the opportunity to better control their patients' high blood pressure, according to a new study.

Researchers found that of 7,153 people with uncontrolled high blood pressure participating in a U.S. survey, only about 20 percent were prescribed new medications during doctors' visits.

High blood pressure is a reading of 140/90 and above.

Uncontrolled high blood pressure has been linked to - among other things - heart attacks, strokes and aneurysms.

"It's a missed opportunity, and we're not trying to blame the doctor," said Dr. Raman Ravi Khanna, the study's lead author from the University of California, San Francisco.

"We want to grab those moments when we can."

National guidelines recommend people with high blood pressure be prescribed medication and those already on medication get a new one if their condition worsens.

For the new study, Khanna and his colleagues wanted to see whether doctors were following those recommendations. They also wanted to know which factors influenced doctors' prescribing decisions.

The researchers reviewed data on 16,473 doctors' visits recorded in the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey between 2005 and 2009 for patients already diagnosed with high blood pressure.

Some of them may have been on blood pressure medicine and others were likely told to bring their blood pressure under control by other means, including lifestyle changes, Khanna explained.

Whether they were on medication or not, more than 7,000 of those patients still had blood pressure that was too high. But only about 20 percent of their doctors' visits ended with patients being prescribed a new blood pressure medicine.

People with very high blood pressure and those who specifically came to the doctor for the condition were more likely to get a new prescription. Meanwhile, those already on blood pressure medicine were less likely get a new one.

The researchers pointed out in the Archives of Internal Medicine that they couldn't tell whether doctors increased the dose of their patients' current blood pressure medicine instead of prescribing a new one, however.

Across the U.S. about one in three adults has high blood pressure, according to the National Institutes of Health - and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says about 36 million Americans' conditions are uncontrolled.

Khanna told Reuters Health it's important that patients remind doctors about their blood pressure.

"If you have uncontrolled blood pressure, you should always bring it up to your doctor, because it's one of the most common problems we deal with. In fact, it's so common that we often forget about it," he said.

Even so, digital forensic sleuths at two antivirus companies ? Kaspersky Labs and Symantec ? on Monday announced new discoveries from piecing together the cyber shards of a program called Flame, which further reveal an extensive cyberespionage operation apparently directed at Iran.

Already, media reports have claimed that the US and Israel launched Stuxnet ? the world's first cyberweapon ? to slow Iran's nuclear program, and that three other cyberespionage programs, including Flame, were part of the same effort. Now, the new analysis reveals traces of at least three more malicious programs targeting Iran, suggesting there are still a significant number of programs yet to be discovered spying on Iranian computers.

There are fresh signs, too, that the harvest has been vast.

?Flame's creators are good at covering their tracks," Alexander Gostev, chief security expert at Kaspersky Lab said in a statement. "But one mistake of the attackers helped us to discover more data...."

The evidence was found on two European servers made to evade detection from hosting providers through their benign name, "Newsforyou." A programming mistake left behind one encrypted file and a data log. An analysis of the data showed that the servers were able to receive data from infected machines using four different protocols; Flame was only one of them.

The existence of three additional protocols not used by Flame "provides proof that at least three other Flame-related malicious programs were created," Kaspersky said.

The discovery hints at a cyberespionage operation vast in scope, with more than five gigabytes of data uploaded from more than 5,000 infected machines to just one of the two command and control servers in Europe each week. Most of the infected computers were in Iran, some in Sudan, and a handful in other countries.

"This is certainly an example of cyber espionage conducted on a massive scale,? Mr. Gostev said.

The onion-like layers of this operation have been peeled back since the discovery of Stuxnet, which was discovered to be targeted at Iran's nuclear fuel-refining system in June 2010. After that, a cyberespionage program dubbed Duqu was unearthed in September 2011, followed by Flame in May, and then Gauss in July.

Sifting their program code, investigators found critical links among them ? enough to call Stuxnet at least a first-cousin to Duqu, Flame, and Gauss. Though built by different teams, the programs had key software that showed the authors were linked in an overarching effort.

In June, the New York Times reported that Stuxnet was part of Operation Olympic Games, a joint project of the US and Israel. By their link to Stuxnet, the other three programs appear to be part of a larger program, too.

"The complexity of the code and confirmed links to developers of Stuxnet all point to the fact that Flame is yet another example of a sophisticated nation-state sponsored cyber operation," the Kaspersky report said.

It added that the development of Flame?s command and control platform started as early as December 2006 ? much earlier that previously thought.

"What these cyberoperations do is allow America to put digital boots on the ground in a foreign country, sparing American lives in the short term," says John Bumgarner, research director for the US Cyber Consequences Unit, a nonprofit security think tank that advises government and industry. "The CIA doesn't need to embed a spy inside Iran, and the US military doesn't need to send a stealth fighter to bomb something."

In the long term, it is not clear whether cyberspying and digital missiles like Stuxnet will be enough to prevent a military conflict, he notes. And the bits and bytes are starting to pile up.

"Despite all these discoveries, there is still a lot of plausible deniability afforded by these digital weapons and espionage tools," he says. "Most of bread crumbs haven't been traced directly back to NSA or CIA. But the traces do, at the very least, suggest such agencies ran these operations."

We have loved our time so far in Colombia. A big part of that is, as they say, location, location, location. Our apartment has been fabulous. A lot of adoptive families opt to stay in a hotel when coming to pick up their child. In particular, there is one hotel in Cali that is highly recommended by our agency and by many, many adoptive families who have stayed there in the past. It has many perks, including all meals provided and daily excursions included. However, I am so glad that we opted for an apartment for our time here. Having two small girls who nap would have been no fun in a single hotel room. Also, we have spent almost every afternoon just chilling as a family in our living space. We brought toys and craft supplies to be able to just hang out and bond together. The extra space has been invaluable.

For any families looking for a place to stay, I highly recommend our hotel. I am so thankful we had the Worley family and our facilitator Magnolia to recommend it to us.

Nielsen shows how people use TV differently

NEW YORK (AP) ? The number of U.S. homes that don't get traditional television service continues to increase, but that doesn't mean they don't have TVs.

The Nielsen company said in a report issued on Tuesday that three-quarters of the estimated 5 million homes that don't get TV signals over the airways or through cable, satellite or telecommunications companies have televisions anyway.

Many of these homes are satisfied to use their TVs for games or get programming through DVDs or services like Netflix or Apple TV, said Dounia Turrill, senior vice president for client insights at Nielsen.

The company's report shows how the nature of TV service is slowly changing. Before the percentage started declining about three years ago, more than 99 percent of TV homes received the traditional TV signals. Now that has dipped just below 96 percent.

Part of the decline is also economic ? service deemed expendable by people struggling to make ends meet, Nielsen said.

Because of the changes, Nielsen is considering redefining what it considers a television household to include people who get service through Netflix or similar services instead of the traditional TV signals, Turrill said.

During the first three months of 2012, the average consumer spent about 2 percent less time watching traditional TV than the previous year, Nielsen said. They more than made up for that by spending more time watching material recorded on DVRs or on the Internet through TVs, computers and mobile devices.

The typical consumer spends 14 minutes a day using gaming consoles, although it's more for owners of Wii, XBox and PlayStation 3, Nielsen said. Many of these devices are also popular sites for accessing video, Turrill said.

"The gaming devices are becoming entertainment hubs," she said.

People over age 65 spend nearly 48 hours, on average, watching television each week, Nielsen said. At the other end of the spectrum are teenagers aged 12 to 17, who spend an average of 22 hours per week watching TV.

Blacks spend an average of 210 hours per month watching TV, more than whites (nearly 153 hours), Latinos (131 hours) and Asians (100 hours), Nielsen said.
