Republicans fume as Keystone oil pipeline rejected (Reuters)

WASHINGTON/CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) ? The Obama Administration rejected the Keystone oil pipeline on Wednesday, a move that Republicans decried for sacrificing jobs and energy security in order to shore up the president's environmental base before elections.

President Barack Obama said the administration denied TransCanada's application for the $7 billion Canada-to-Texas oil sands pipeline because there was not enough time to review an alternate route that would avoid a sensitive aquifer in Nebraska -- within a 60-day window set by Congress.

The Canadian firm quickly said it would re-apply for the permit, which it first sought in 2008. But U.S. officials said it would still take more than a year for the State Department to complete a new environmental review -- pushing any final decision on the line well beyond November's elections.

Even so, Keystone seems certain to become a key issue for the coming presidential campaign, with Republicans accusing Obama imperiling U.S. energy security and environmentalists cheering the White House for standing up to big oil.

Canada has said the uncertainty will cause it to intensify efforts to sell more crude to China.

The administration rejected the attacks, arguing Republicans inserted an unrealistic deadline in legislation in December that was designed to force Obama's hand by the end of February. That measure came after the State Department in November moved to delay a decision in order to study a route that would avoid part of the Ogallala Acquifer, a major source of fresh water.

"I'm disappointed that Republicans in Congress forced this decision," Obama said.

Mitt Romney, front runner for the Republican presidential nomination, blasted Obama on the announcement, saying he demonstrated a "lack of seriousness" in tackling high unemployment.

"He seems to have confused the national interest with his own interest in pleasing the environmentalists in his political base," Romney said in statement.

Newt Gingrich, another contender in Republican race for presidential nominee, called Obama's decision "stunningly stupid."

LOATHING OIL SANDS

Environmentalists, a key voting bloc that helped Obama win the White House in 2008, had pushed for him to block the 1,700-mile pipeline, saying their support in his reelection campaign depended on that decision.

Environmental groups loathe the idea of increasing the flow of oil sands crude from Canada because of its bigger carbon footprint in the mining process. They cheered the Obama administration in November when it announced it would delay the project, which could transport 830,000 barrels per day of crude.

But lawmakers, led by Republicans, attached a measure to a popular tax cut bill in December that called on Obama to make a decision on the pipeline by the end of February.

The decision, made long before the deadline, also provides the White House with a talking point to take on the campaign trail after delivering the State of the Union next week.

Despite the rejection of the Keystone project, Obama expressed general support for an oil pipeline between Cushing, Oklahoma, and the Gulf of Mexico.

Oil producers were depending on Keystone to help ease a glut of crude at the Cushing delivery point for the New York Mercantile Exchange and shift the crude to the Texas refining center where more oil can be processed.

A CAMPAIGN ISSUE

Republican lawmakers and oil and gas industry groups vowed to keep fighting for the pipeline, which requires State Department approval because it crosses international borders.

Lawmakers have already begun work on a plan to take the decision making power from the White House and give the project an immediate go-ahead.

"All options are on the table," House speaker John Boehner said at a press conference after the decision was announced.

Ultimately, oil and gas analysts said it could be possible to work out a deal to greenlight Keystone after the November election.

Kevin Book, an energy analyst at Clearview Energy Partners, said that even an approval in 2013 could still have "important implications for North American supply" because it would establish a six- or seven-year process for approval of pipelines that cross national borders.

"Should environmentalists replicate last year's successful delays in future permit decisions, it would turn what used to be a de facto "rubber stamp" into a long, drawn-out fight every time," Book said in a research note.

PROFOUNDLY DISAPPOINTED

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said he expressed in a phone call with Obama his "profound disappointment" with the rejection, which follows years of intense lobbying in Washington in support of the project, which is partly aimed at raising returns for oil sands producers.

Harper and other officials across the country said they believe Keystone XL will eventually proceed, but that the rejection underlines the need to diversify markets.

The oil sands of northern Alberta are the third-largest crude source after those in Saudi Arabia and Venezuela, but production is more energy and carbon-intensive.

Harper and his Conservative government are pushing hard to boost exports of the crude in the United States and in Asia, seeking employment and economic gains, but face stiff opposition at home and abroad from environmentalists and native groups.

Alberta Premier Alison Redford, whose Western province derives about a third of its revenue from the tar sands and other oil and gas activity, said she spoke to TransCanada officials and will consider ways to move the project forward together.

"It's still entirely possible for this project to proceed. There is no doubt that is the opinion of the applicants in the project and we're going to support them in any way they find helpful to try to achieve success on this project," she said.

CAUGHT IN MIDDLE

The pipeline placed the Obama administration in the middle of a dispute between two key parts of its voting block: green groups who oppose the pipeline over concerns about climate change and some unions who back the project because of the jobs they believe it would create.

Supporters say it would create thousands of jobs and is integral to U.S. energy security.

Environmentalists say the job-creation claims are inflated and warn that the pipeline would lock the nation into the use of carbon-intensive oil sands crude for years.

"The knock on Barack Obama from many quarters has been that he's too conciliatory," said Bill McKibben, who led protests against the pipeline through his organization 350.org. "But here, in the face of a naked political threat from Big Oil to exact 'huge political consequences,' he's stood up strong."

ConocoPhillips Chief Executive Jim Mulva said on Wednesday that Canadian oil sands development will go ahead, despite the decision on Keystone.

"It's difficult for me to understand why the Keystone project is not quickly approved," Mulva told reporters at an energy conference at Rice University.

German chief calls for gays to come out

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:57 a.m. ET Jan. 17, 2012

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -The departing German football federation president says it's time for gay players to come out.

Theo Zwanziger, who will leave the post in March, called on gay players "to have the courage to declare themselves," although he conceded it was surely difficult to acknowledge one's homosexuality within a team.

Zwanziger pointed to the example of Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit, who came out years ago.

Speaking at a discussion on the subject organized by the federation, Zwanziger said on Tuesday that society was more understanding than a few years ago for any gays in football willing to out themselves.

Germany captain Philipp Lahm, however, disagrees.

"Football is like being the gladiators in the old times," Lahm said in an interview published Monday. "The politicians can come out these days, for sure, but they don't have to play in front of 60,000 people every week.

"I don't think that the society is that far ahead that it can accept homosexual players as something normal as in other areas."

Zwanziger said Lahm is a tolerant person "and if that's how he sees the situation, I am not going to be the one to criticize him."

No player in Germany's professional leagues has so far acknowledged his homosexuality.

Golden Globes Led By George Clooney, 'The Artist'

Host Ricky Gervais returns, as 'Modern Family,' Michelle Williams and Meryl Streep also take home statues on Sunday night.
By Ryan J. Downey

On Sunday night (January 15), George Clooney and "The Artist" continued their awards-season domination while Ricky Gervais giddily piled on the humiliation as the 69th annual Golden Globes went down in Hollywood.

The returning host kept his most pointed barbs confined to the monologue, while the Hollywood Foreign Press Association spread the love a bit more evenly than some predicted, with Globes for stars like Meryl Streep and Michelle Williams. Expected winners also took home statues, with Clooney nabbing Best Actor and "The Artist" winning Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical; the actor and film, like Best Supporting Actor Christopher Plummer and Best Supporting Actress Octavia Spencer have been cleaning up this month.

"Cheers. So, where was I?" Gervais began, in an appropriately devilish red suit.

The awards show itself was the comedian's first major target ("the Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton"), followed by the Oscars ("when the man who said 'yes' to 'Norbit,' says 'no' to you, you know you're in trouble"), the HFPA, Jodie Foster (Elton John looked unimpressed), Kim Kardashian ("I've sat through longer James Cameron acceptance speeches than [her marriage]"), Justin Bieber ("the only way that he could have impregnated a girl is if he borrowed one of Martha Stewart's old turkey basters") and more.

Gervais introduced the first presenter of the night, Johnny Depp, with a plug for his own forthcoming HBO series, "Life's Too Short," which in one episode's fit of "meta" casting features Depp as himself grilling Gervais about last year's Golden Globes. Depp sipped from Gervais' glass of beer before the comedian asked him if he'd seen "The Tourist" yet. "No," Depp responded, as he stifled a laugh. (Depp went on to introduce a short clip about Martin Scorsese's 3-D picture "Hugo," which was nominated for Best Motion Picture - Drama.)

Gerard Butler and Mila Kunis presented the award for Best Supporting Actor to Plummer for his role as a gay man who comes out late in life in "Beginners."

"What a wonderful welcome back to the home of King Kong, Rin-Tin Tin and all our youthful fantasies," the 82-year-old screen legend said. "I must praise my distinguished competitors for whom I have the greatest admiration and to whom I apologize most profusely. And I want to salute my partner, Ewan, that wily Scot; Ewan 'My Heart's in the Highlands' McGregor." His last bit of thanks was reserved for his wife of 43 years, Elaine. "[Her] bravery and beauty haunts me still."

"Two and a Half Men" star Ashton Kutcher and supermodel Elle Macpherson were up next to present Best Actress in a TV Series - Comedy or Musical. The Globe went to Laura Dern for "Enlightened," marking her third win overall at the event.

Teleprompter problems plagued Rob Lowe and Julianne Moore as they introduced this year's Miss Golden Globe (Rainey Qualley, daughter of actress Andy MacDowell). The pair went on to present the award for Best Mini-Series or TV Movie to "Downton Abbey." Fans of the hit PBS series include Patton Oswalt, who once tweeted that the show is "Star Trek for tea drinkers!"

"We're already five minutes over," Gervais chided when he returned to the stage, digging into overly long acceptance speeches. "You don't need to thank everyone you've ever met ... just do the main two, your agent and God." The self-described atheist added that both had an "equal amount" of input into his career. From there, he brought up the scene in "Bridesmaids" where Melissa McCarthy's character moves her bowels in a sink. "Amazingly, that's still less demeaning than what most of you have done to make it in show business," he told the audience.

McCarthy and Paula Patton gave the Best Actor in a Comedy Series Globe to Kelsey Grammer for "Boss" (prompting viewers like @mindykaling to reminisce about the actor's semi-legendary fall from a stage) and Best TV Series - Drama to "Homeland."

Jimmy Fallon broke out his Mick Jagger moves before presenting the award for Best Song and Best Score with Maroon Five's Adam Levine to "The Artist" composer Ludovic Bource. Madonna and Elton John had earlier engaged in some red-carpet cattiness about the Best Original Song - Motion Picture category, in which they were both nominated. Ultimately, it was Madge who triumphed: Her win for the song she wrote for directorial effort "W.E." followed a previous Golden Globe for her starring performance in 1996's "Evita."

Seth Rogen and a typically stunning Kate Beckinsale soon followed. "Hello, I'm Seth Rogen, and I am currently trying to conceal a massive erection," he said, which kept Beckinsale laughing as they introduced the nominees for Best Actress in a Comedy.

Michelle Williams won for "My Week with Marilyn," a film Rogen dryly called a "hysterical comedy" (the movie is arguably more of a drama, despite its categorization). "I consider myself a mother first and an actress second, so the person that I most want to thank is my daughter," Williams said, speaking about Matilda Rose, her child with late actor Heath Ledger. She also thanked the HFPA "for putting in my hands this same award that Marilyn Monroe herself won over 50 years ago. Thank you, I'm honored."

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Piper Parabo presented Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series, Mini-Series or TV Movie to Peter Dinklage for "Game of Thrones."

"I was talking to my mother in Jersey before I came out and she said, 'Have fun but, 'Have you seen Mildred Pierce? Guy Pearce is so good, he's going to win!'. ... I just love our moms, 'cause they keep us humble," Dinklage said. He then drew attention to the story of Martin Henderson, a dwarf who suffered a serious injury reportedly inspired by a cruel "dwarf-tossing" competition.

Ricky's punch line when he introduced Madonna was little more than a well-placed clearing of his throat, which followed this: "Our next presenter is the Queen of Pop — not you, Elton, sit down. She's all woman. I'll give you some clues: She's always vogue. She's a material girl. And she's just like a virgin ... ahem." The Queen of Pop was ready with a quick retort: "If I'm still just like a virgin, then why don't you come over here and do something about it?" she challenged. "I haven't kissed a girl in a few years — on TV."

"Seriously nuts... Seriously," Spencer said after Bradley Cooper introduced Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture. "The Help" star has been stacking up awards this month for her part in the breakout hit. "With regard to domestics in this country, now and then I think Dr. King said it best: 'All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance.' " She then sped through her thank-you's in a comedic nod to the show's habit of playing off winners mid-speech. "Table 10, thank you again!" she concluded.

Reese Witherspoon introduced "The Descendants," which she noted was directed by "my friend, Alexander Payne," with whom she made the classic dark comedy, "Election." Later in the show, Robert Downey Jr. introduced the film "The Artist."

Morgan Freeman is only the second African American actor to receive the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award; he accepted it 30 years after Sidney Poitier was similarly honored in 1982. The 84-year-old Poitier received a standing ovation when he came out to introduce Freeman. "In my humble opinion, sir, you are indeed a prince in the profession you have chosen. We thank you, Mr. Freeman, for raising the level of excellence yet another notch. Welcome aboard, Morgan Freeman," he said. The 74-year-old Freeman was honored for a career that includes iconic roles in movies like "Driving Miss Daisy," "Glory," "The Shawshank Redemption" and "Million Dollar Baby."

Angelina Jolie gave Martin Scorsese Best Director - Motion Picture for "Hugo." "Sit down, sit down, everybody!" he commanded. He thanked the HFPA for all of the work they do to help ensure the preservation and restoration of cinema, which tied directly into "Hugo."

Gervais joked about Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas' accents when he introduced them, prompting a long, non-English response from Banderas. "Ricky, I don't understand [Banderas] either," Hayek teased. The pair gave the Golden Globe for Best Television Series - Comedy or Musical to "Modern Family," with Columbian castmember Sofia Vergara accepting with a short speech in Spanish that one of the show's producers comically mistranslated.

Michelle Pfeiffer introduced Steven Spielberg's "War Horse." Presenters Jessica Biel and Mark Wahlberg were up next. Wahlberg complimented Biel's pronunciation of Jean Dujardin (Best Actor winner for Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical), before Queen Latifah introduced "The Help." Then Gervais was back onstage. "Nearly there, nearly there," he said at the two-and-a-half-hour mark.

"Our next presenter is British, like me. But unlike me, he's won an Oscar, for his brilliant portrayal in 'The King's Speech.' He's also swooned over by women," Gervais went on, also noting Colin Firth's high profile with critics. "What you don't know about him is he's very racist. I've also seen him punch a little blind kitten. Please welcome the evil Colin Firth!"

Firth pretended to kick Gervais when he came out, but the actor was smiling. "As I was on my way in, I noticed some very angry religious people outside threatening us all with brimstone ... for our sins. ... What they don't realize is we have Ricky."

"When Ricky Gervais' deal fell through and they came to me to play Margret Thatcher," Meryl Streep began as she accepted Best Actress, Motion Picture for "The Iron Lady." Clooney helped pass her glasses to the stage so she could better read her speech, but she stayed off her notes and offered heartfelt appreciation for all of the women nominated in the category alongside her. "I just want to thank my agent and God — Harvey Weinstein, the punisher," she added to much laughter and applause.

Jane Fonda presented Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical to "The Artist," as even the dog from the film took the stage.

Natalie Portman, Best Actress for "Black Swan" at last year's Globe's, was the next presenter. Gervais pointed out that she's nominated for nothing this year, seeing how she took time off to have her baby. "She's learned that valuable lesson that all of you knew: never put family first!" Portman gave the Golden Globe for Best Actor, Motion Picture - Drama to Clooney for "The Descendants." The star first gave a shout-out to Brad Pitt, followed by a "thank you" to Michael Fassbender "for taking over the frontal nudity responsibility that I had," before making an off-color joke that involved golf. Alexander Payne accepted the Best Picture, Drama award from Harrison Ford shortly afterward.

Factors Affecting Health Care Utilization for Children in Japan

Ishida Y et al. ? Compared with the data from the United States, more children in Japan visit community physicians and hospital?based outpatient clinics. Results of this study would be useful for further delineation of health care utilization of children in the context of a health care system unique to Japan.

Methods
  • A population-weighted random sample from a nationally representative panel of households was used to estimate the number of health-related symptoms, over-the-counter medicine doses, and health care utilizations per 1000 Japanese children per month.
  • Variations in terms of age, gender, socioeconomic status, and residence location were also examined.
Results
  • Based on 1286 households (3477 persons including 1024 children) surveyed, on average per 1000 children, 872 had at least 1 symptom, 335 visited a physician's office, 82 a hospital-based outpatient clinic, 21 a hospital emergency department, and 2 a university-based outpatient clinic.
  • Two were hospitalized, and 4 received professional health care in their home.
  • Children had 2 times more physician visits and 3 times more emergency visits than adults in Japan, and Japanese children had 2.5 times more physician visits and 11 times more hospital-based outpatient clinic visits than US children.
  • Pediatric health care utilization is influenced significantly by age but not affected by income or residence location in Japan.

Civil union costs estimate for city revised

A St. Louis-based actuary says he is revising his estimate that providing benefits to spouses of employees in civil unions would cost the city of Springfield an extra $725,000 a year.

The revision comes as the city?s Joint Labor/Management Health Care Committee on Tuesday is scheduled to reconsider its 10-0 decision not to provide the benefits.

The actuary?s estimate has been questioned by Mayor Mike Houston, who has said he believes the city, which is self-insured, can offer the coverage without a significant increase in premiums.

Responding to city questions last week about his assumption that 65 people would participate in the plan if it were offered, Ray Martin of MarAcon LLC pointed to national census figures that showed roughly 6.5 percent of households nationwide have ?unrelated members? living together.

?The unrelated members could be same sex or opposite,? he wrote to city budget director Bill McCarty. ?Both have potential to move to a civil union to receive benefits.?

Martin, who couldn?t be reached for further comment, also included an added cost of 25 percent for each participant.

?Employers with generous benefit packages, such as municipalities, have the potential for abuse of civil unions and thus a higher percentage than the general population,? he wrote. ?Especially if there are medical problems with the new ?spouse.?

That is the reason for the 25 percent load on the spouse costs. One $100,000 claim could wipe out that estimate.?

Just two in Peoria

Springfield officials say they checked with other local governments ? Sangamon County, Decatur, Peoria, Champaign and Bloomington ? and found that the most civil union participants are in Peoria, where there are two.

Decatur, which also is self-insured, started providing benefits to spouses of employees in civil unions last summer after the new state law took effect.

Decatur city manager Ryan McCrady said the city didn?t have an actuarial study done to see how much the extra benefits would cost.

?We assume the cost per life covered is the same as a person getting married or having children, taking on other dependents,? he said.

So far, only one person in Decatur has requested benefits as part of a civil union, McCrady said. Each person covered by the insurance plan costs about $650 a month, a cost that is shared by the employee and the city, he said.

Focus on fairness

Ward 5 Ald. Sam Cahnman said Martin?s explanation for how he reached his estimate makes no sense.

He questioned why national census data was used, rather than local data, and pointed out that Martin provides no explanation of why there?s more chance that civil unions would be abused in order to obtain? health benefits than marriages.

?The actuary appears to be covering his derriere, so there?s no way the costs could exceed his inflated projection,? Cahnman said. ?He has done that, but at no service to the city.? ?

Martin said he would further explain his rationale after preparing the revised estimate.

Ward 3 Ald. Doris Turner, who also continues to question the actuary?s calculations, said the main focus should remain on fairness.

?There is a state law that says individuals who are in a civil union are entitled to the same benefits as those afforded spouses,? she said. ?Without exception, I believe that the law requires the city to provide the same level of benefits to civil union partners as for married employees.?

***

Tuesday?s meeting not open to public

Springfield?s Joint Labor/Management Health Care Committee will meet Tuesday morning to discuss whether to reverse its previous decision not to provide benefits to spouses of employees in civil unions.

The city says the committee?s meetings are not open to the public because they deal with collective bargaining issues.

?The committee functions as part of the collective bargaining process,? wrote Mark Cullen, Springfield corporation counsel.

?The meetings of the committee are negotiations in the same way that the city bargains with collective bargaining units about all other employee benefits.?

The 12-member committee, which was created in 2002, is the policy-making body for Springfield?s employee health insurance coverage. It is made up of five union members, two retirees, two aldermen and three city managers.

Man flies Afghanistan dogs to Canada

Teacher rescues seven dogs from Afghanistan

?

EDMONTON ? Almost two years ago, and half a world away, a local teacher stumbled upon an abused dog and her nine puppies cowering in a gutter.

"I saw the mom first and she was so friendly -- despite how horrifically abused she was -- and then I saw these tiny white puppies," said Spencer Sekyer, who was volunteering at a school in Kabul, Afghanistan when he found the pathetic pups.

"I took one look and knew I had to help them."

The junior high teacher has spent several summers volunteering at schools in some of the most violent and poverty-stricken countries in the world -- including Afghanistan, where stray dogs roam the streets by the hundreds.

After taking the scrawny animals to get vaccinated, he found three of them "forever" homes in the Afghan city, he said.

But when he realized there were no more takers, he decided to fly the rest of the litter and their mom home to Canada.

"The expenses to get them over here are daunting," said Sekyer who added the rescue came with a whopping $28,000 price tag.

"Luckily, Nowzad -- a shelter in Kabul -- offered to house them until we could figure it out."

Sekyer returned home and, along with his wife Christie, began to brainstorm fundraising ideas.

Remembering they had a trip planned to Mount Kilimanjaro, they decided to use their climb to raise thousands of dollars for the pups.

"It was one of the most difficult things I've ever done," he said. "But I kept thinking how bony those dogs were, and it kept me going."

It usually takes a dedicated dog lover to go to such lengths to save a handful of strays, but Sekyer said he just wanted to do the "right thing."

"I think it was Gandhi that said, 'You can judge a nation by the way it treats its animals,' and that's something I fully agree with in my travels," said Sekyer.

"The better we are to animals, the better a place it is to live."

After making a video about the dogs' plight and posting it to YouTube, the couple was contacted by an Air Canada employee who offered to help bring the dogs to Canada.

"A woman who works for Air Canada heard about Emma and the puppies and wanted to help," said Sekyer.

"She actually flew them part of the way here for free."

The journey from Afghanistan to Canada was a long one, he said. The entire trip took almost two years and about 18,400 km.

Travelling in seven crates, the pups flew from Kabul to Dubai, then from there to Frankfurt, Germany. After that, the pooches landed in Calgary where Sekyer, his wife and their sister-in-law picked them up Friday and brought them to back to Edmonton.

But, he says, they're not home yet.

An owner of two dogs himself -- one a rather territorial female -- he's not able to keep them.

He's hoping to find experienced dog lovers in the area to adopt them and he's willing to give them away for free.

"My sister-in-law is taking one, but that leaves five puppies, and Emma," he explained.

"These girls have endured so much so it's really important to me they have the best homes possible."

Experienced dog owners interested in adopting one or more of the Afghan dogs for free can phone the Sekyer's at 780-499-4324.

China calls for calm after man dies from bird flu

Health authorities in southern China are urging residents not to panic after a man who contracted the bird flu virus died at the weekend, the official Xinhua news agency said Monday.

The man, surnamed Chen, died on Saturday in Shenzhen -- a boomtown that borders Hong Kong where thousands of chickens have already been culled after three birds tested positive for the H5N1 avian influenza virus in mid-December.

The Shenzhen Disease Control Centre confirmed that Chen, a bus driver, had contracted H5N1 from poultry, but they were still trying to find out where he acquired the virus.

Chen is China's first reported human case of the deadly disease in 18 months.

"The virus cannot spread among people" and "there is no need for Shenzhen citizens to panic," Xinhua said, citing a statement from the centre.

Chen developed a fever on December 21 and was taken to hospital four days later, and diagnosed with severe pneumonia, the health department in Shenzhen, a city of more than 10 million people, said in an earlier statement.

The 39-year-old had apparently had no direct contact with poultry in the month before he was taken ill, nor had he left the city, the department said.

The H5N1 virus is fatal in humans in about 60 percent of cases.

However, it does not pass easily among humans, and the World Health Organization says it has never identified a "sustained human-to-human spread" of the virus since it re-emerged in 2003.

Chinese and Hong Kong authorities have been working closely together since December 21 after live poultry supplies were suspended to the glitzy financial hub following the discovery of infected birds.

Authorities in Hong Kong have raised the bird flu alert level to "serious" since they discovered infected chickens, resulting in major disruptions to poultry supplies over the busy Christmas period.

China is considered one of the nations most at risk of bird flu epidemics because it has the world's biggest poultry population and many chickens in rural areas are kept close to humans.

First of all, all werewolves have increased sight, hearing, and smell. Vampires also have increased eyesight, hearing, and smell, but not as much as werewolves in werewolf forms. A werewolf in human form though has these senses slightly less then a vampire.

Vampires can survive in the sun if they have eaten. They also are fairly fast considering, but werewolves are faster in werewolf form when on all fours. Vampires can drain the blood of their victims to access their memories. Werewolves are also very strong. The Vampires however can carry weapons.

Werewolves/Lycans do NOT need a full moon to change, however, they do feel compelled to.

Note: There are very few differences between Half-bloods and pure bloods.

Pure Bloods:
Almost Total control over their werewolf form
More compelled to shift during a full moon, which made them fight for their lives and suffer during full moons when they had the collars on.
They don't have as much hunger
They are easier to sniff out to a vampire or other werewolves
Have more control over their anger, sadness, and rage
Silver does affect them more

Half Bloods:
Less control over their werewolf form
Less compelled to shift during a full moon, which helps the ones enslaved with the colars, but if they were free, they would then probably shift during a full moon.
A lot more hunger, due to the combination of a werewolf and human metabolism.
Harder to sniff out in crowds and towns, as they small partially human, making it harder for them to be tracked.
Less control over anger, sadness, and rage
Silver doesn't affect them as much as a pure blood werewolf, due to human DNA.

Other then that, they are practically the same, but still highly discriminated against. Often, half bloods are called "Vokur", which is just werewolf slang for "Mud Pup", which is a high insult upon werewolves.

SPeaking of slang:

Random slang words for various people to use:

"Vokur": Mud Pup, Half Blood insult
Parasite: Vampire insult, most hate being called this.
Feline: Calling a werewolf feline is not wise if it is not chained up, trapped, or badly wounded.....and i mean BADLY.....
"Shetz": Basically slang for a half blood calling a pure blood "weak, idiotic, and pathetic"
Monsters: Do i even need to explain how racist this is? Only humans, that are far away from any vampires or werewolves, that are brave, would speak this.
Apes: Generic anything on human insult

I think that's about it!

Oh, yeah, humans have the majority, just a FYI.

Oh, and due to lack of people expected to come now, we can start posting. Il just keep the lead hunter role for myself until someone else claims it.

Report: 'Teen Mom' Amber getting evicted

Madison County Sheriff Department

By Anna Chan

Hope "Teen Mom" Amber Portwood's New Year's resolution wasn't to have a better year than 2011, because 2012 is getting off to a pretty crummy start.

According to TMZ, the troubled young reality personality is losing her Indiana?home because her landlord filed eviction documents with the courts Wednesday. The gossip site notes that the docs indicate?Portwood violated her lease agreement, but details were not given.

Portwood is currently in jail for violating the terms of her probation. She pled guilty to two counts of felony domestic violence last June after MTV aired an episode of "Teen Mom" in which she was shown repeatedly punching and slapping ex-fiance Gary Shirley, the father of her toddler, Leah. The judge had given her a two-year suspended sentence and placed her on two years of probation in that case. She is now also accused of committing?two new felonies -- battery and possession of a controlled substance.

The judge handling her case, David Happe, ordered Portwood to stay behind bars until at least Jan. 27. At least she has a place to stay?

The legal issues keep piling up for her! What do you predict could be next? Or will she shape up??Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

How do consumers use engine efficiency? On bigger, faster cars.

Engine efficiency has vastly improved in recent decades, but that has made cars bigger and faster, rather than more fuel-efficient

Auto companies?have made great strides in improving engine efficiency in recent decades. But those improvements haven?t done much to improve the fuel economy of America?s passenger car fleet.?Instead, consumers have ?spent??most of those efficiency improvements on bigger, faster cars.

Recent posts

MIT economist Christopher Knittel has carefully quantified these tradeoffs in a?recent paper in the American Economic Review (pdf; earlier ungated version here).?As noted by Peter Dizikes of MIT?s News Office:?

[B]etween?1980 and 2006, the average gas mileage of vehicles sold in the United States increased by slightly more than 15 percent ? a relatively modest improvement. But during that time, Knittel?has found, the average curb weight of those vehicles increased 26 percent, while their horsepower rose 107 percent. All factors being equal, fuel economy actually increased by 60 percent between 1980 and 2006, as Knittel shows in a new research paper, ?Automobiles on Steroids,? just published in the American Economic Review.

Thus if Americans today were driving cars of the same size and power that were typical in 1980, the country?s fleet of autos would have jumped from an average of about 23 miles per gallon (mpg) to roughly 37 mpg, well above the current average of around 27 mpg. Instead, Knittel says, ?Most of that technological progress has gone into [compensating for] weight and horsepower.?

This is a fine?example of a very common?phenomenon: consumers often ?spend? technological improvements in?ways that partially offset the direct effect of the improvement. If you make engines more efficient, consumers purchase heavier cars. If you increase fuel economy, consumers drive more. If you give hikers cell phones, they go to riskier places. If you make low-fat cookies, people eat more. And on and on. People really do respond to incentives.

Madoff ?feeder funds? cannot recover money

Investors in "feeder funds" who lost money with Bernard Madoff do not qualify as customers of the now-imprisoned swindler, a federal judge ruled.

Thursday's decision by U.S. District Judge Denise Cote in Manhattan upheld a June 2011 ruling by U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Burton Lifland, who oversees the liquidation of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC.

It is a victory for Irving Picard, the court-appointed trustee seeking money for Madoff's former customers.

Picard had rejected claims made by customers that invested indirectly with Madoff through the feeder funds but did not have accounts with Madoff's firm.

Cote said the feeder fund investors knew they were buying "ownership shares" of the funds, and had no property interest in fund assets that were funneled to Madoff.

Even accepting that the feeder funds conspired to advance Madoff's Ponzi scheme, the law "simply does not protect against all cases of alleged dishonesty and fraud," Cote said.

Study: Parasitic fly could explain bee die-off

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) ? Northern California scientists say they have found a possible explanation for a honey bee die-off that has decimated hives around the world: A parasitic fly that hijacks the bees' bodies and causes them to abandon hives.

Scientists say the fly deposits its eggs into the bee's abdomen, causing the infected bee to exhibit zombie-like behavior by walking around in circles with no apparent sense of direction. The bee leaves the hive at night and dies shortly thereafter.

The symptoms mirror colony collapse disorder, in which all the adult honey bees in a colony suddenly disappear.

The disease is of great concern, because bees pollinate about a third of the United States' food supply. Its presence is especially alarming in California, the nation's top producer of fruits and vegetables, where bees play an essential role in the $2 billion almond industry and other crops.

The latest study, published Tuesday in the science journal PLoS ONE, points to the parasitic fly as the new threat to honey bees. It's another step in ongoing research to find the cause of the disease.

Researchers haven't been able to pin down an exact cause of colony collapse or find a way to prevent it. Research so far points to a combination of factors including pesticide contamination, a lack of blooms ? and hence nutrition ? and mites, fungi, viruses and parasites.

Interaction among the parasite and multiple pathogens could be one possible factor in colony collapse, according to the latest study by researchers at San Francisco State University. It says the phorid fly, or apocephalus borealis, was found in bees from three-quarters of the 31 hives surveyed in the San Francisco Bay area.

The combination of a parasite, pathogens and other stressors could cause die-off, lead investigator John Hafernik said. The parasitic fly serves as a reservoir that harbors pathogens ? honey bees from parasite-infected hives tested positive for deformed wing virus and other pathogens, the study found.

"We don't fully understand the web of interactions," Hafernik said. "The parasite could be another stressor, enough to push the bee over tipping point. Or it could play a primary role in causing the disease."

Hafernik stumbled onto the parasitic fly by accident. Three years ago, the biology professor looked for something to feed a praying mantis. He found some bees outside his classroom, placed them in a vial and forgot about them. When he looked at the vial a week later, he found dead bees surrounded by small fly pupae. A parasitic fly was feeding on the bees and had killed them, he said.

The fly is a known parasite in bumble bees. Scientists used DNA barcoding to confirm the parasite in the honey bees and bumble bees was the same species.

The fly might have recently expanded its host presence from bumble bees to honey bees, Hafernik said, making it an emerging threat to agricultural pollinators. The fact that honey bees live in large colonies placed in close proximity to one another and beekeepers frequently move the hives throughout the country could lead to an explosion of the fly population, he said.

The fly, which is found all over North America, could also become a threat to native bees.

Hafernik plans to expand his research to other parts of the country and to study the parasite's impact on agriculture in California's Central Valley.

Since it was recognized in 2006, colony collapse has destroyed colonies at a rate of about 30 percent per year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Before that, losses were about 15 percent per year from a variety of pests and diseases.

Bethesda, Maryland The American Association of Anatomists' 2012 Basmajian Award will be presented on April 24 to Todd Hoagland, associate professor in the department of cell biology, neurobiology and anatomy at the Medical College of Wisconsin. The awards ceremony will take place at the AAA Annual Meeting at EB 2012 (Tuesday, April 24, San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina, San Diego, CA).

This award recognizes health science faculty who are in the formative stages of their career, teach human or veterinary gross anatomy, can document excellence in their contribution to the teaching of gross anatomy, and have outstanding accomplishments in biomedical research or scholarship in education.

According to Joseph C. Besharse, Marvin Wagner Professor and chair of cell biology, neurobiology and anatomy at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Hoagland "is a true academic in that he believes in and participates in medical education research. He also has extensive administrative experience as a long-term course Director at BU and now at MCW." Besharse goes on to say that in a short time Hoagland "has become an important and respected member of the MCW medical education community."

Besharse also notes the quality of Hoagland's character, explaining he has an "inherent ability to see and seek common ground among competing interests while keeping the interests of our students in the foreground. This has become obvious in the respect he has gained from more research-intensive faculty in the Department those faculty see him as a leader and valued colleague, and his recruitment has gone a long way toward bridging the gap between research intensive faculty and their responsibilities to medical education."

In addition to collaborating with clinicians and basic scientists on clinically applicable anatomic science research and medical education studies, Hoagland has shown he believes improving the academic training of the next generation is a priority by developing, with Chair Mark Moss, the Vesalius program at Boston University School of Medicine. Hoagland explains "One of our goals of this teacher training program was to ensure every graduate from the department was a competent steward of anatomical science knowledge and some could go on to be master educators. We believed that doctoral students shouldn't just be chained to a lab bench, but instead get experiences that replicate those of junior faculty."

Hoagland received his undergraduate degree in biology from Bucknell University and his Ph.D. in physiology from the University of Notre Dame. Since 2010, he has been a member of the Medical College of Wisconsin faculty, where he is currently a course director for Clinical Human Anatomy and Advanced Clinical Anatomy (4th year elective), and anatomy discipline steward and co-director for the Musculoskeletal Skin module in the pilot integrated curriculum. Hoagland's hard work and dedication has allowed him to earn several teaching awards, an award for outstanding ethical leadership and induction into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.

Hoagland is an active member of the American Association of Anatomists (AAA), the American Association of Clinical Anatomists (AACA), the American Physiological Society (APS), and the International Association of Medical Sciences Educators (IAMSE).

Substantianal Medical Research Council award to follow up promising Cardiff University discovery

A promising line of attack against pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer is to be explored further at Cardiff University, thanks to substantial new funding from the Medical Research Council (MRC).

Pancreatitis can develop when the enzymes needed for digestion turn on the pancreas itself. Chronic pancreatitis increases the risk of pancreatic cancer, which has the lowest five-year survival rate of all common cancers in the UK. High alcohol intake and gallstones are the most common causes of pancreatitis.

Last year, Professor Ole Petersen and colleagues at Cardiff University's School of Biosciences, revealed that a protein call calmodulin could protect the pancreas against the effects of alcohol. In cells without calmodulin, alcohol speeds up a chain reaction causing cells to self-destruct, leading to pancreatitis and potentially to pancreatic cancer. The team also discovered a calcium-like molecule which could boost the pancreas' natural protection against digestive enzymes. These breakthroughs have just been highlighted in the MRC's review of the most significant developments of 2011.

Now Professor Petersen's team has secured a 2M MRC Programme Grant to investigate the potential of the calcium-like molecule further. Over the next five years, they will test its ability to protect against enzymes in a number of circumstances known to trigger pancreatitis. The team will also investigate special cells in the pancreas called stellate cells. Little is known about stellate cells but they could be the link between chronic pancreatitis and the development of pancreatic cancer.

Professor Petersen has also has his MRC Professorship renewed the only post of its kind in Wales. He said: "These are extremely complex molecular processes but we believe they are crucial to our understanding of these painful and distressing diseases. We aim to identify ways of controlling these processes to help prevent and treat acute pancreatitis. We also hope to build on our existing knowledge to better understand stellate cells and block the onset of pancreatic cancer. We are extremely grateful to the MRC for their support and encouragement of this promising research avenue."
