Tip from former LAPD mentor led to Dorner manhunt

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The training officer whose dispute with former Los Angeles police Officer Christopher Dorner led to his firing said Thursday that it was her hunch that led police to name him as the suspect in the killing of an Orange County couple, setting off an intense and deadly manhunt that ended with Dorner's suicide in a mountain cabin.

"In my mind, it felt like such a long shot," said Teresa Evans. Dorner, her partner and trainee, had accused her of police brutality in 2008, leading to his dismissal for making false statements in 2009. "But my gut feeling made it a lot stronger than that. I just knew. Something told me that there was some kind of a connection."

On. Feb. 4, when few knew Dorner's name, police in National City near San Diego called Evans, saying they had found some of his belongings including ammunition, pieces of a police uniform and a notebook with her name in it.

"Just hearing his name was enough to make me feel sick," Evans said in an interview the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/X05dHQ ).

The same day she learned that Monica Quan, daughter of former LAPD Captain Randal Quan, and her fianc? had been shot to death, their bodies found in a car at an Irvine parking garage.

Evans recalled that Randal Quan had represented Dorner in disciplinary hearings at the time of his firing.

She said she couldn't shake a "nagging, sinking feeling," wondering if Dorner could have killed Monica Quan in some kind of vendetta against her father.

"I have to call Irvine PD," she remembered thinking.

Irvine police quickly learned how valuable the tip was, discovering an online manifesto written by Dorner that outlined his motives and intentions and named several targets within the LAPD.

By Feb. 6, three days after the shooting, Irvine police held a news conference naming Dorner as their suspect. The next morning, authorities said, Dorner was opening fire on police officers, and for the six days that followed he would be the subject of one of the biggest manhunts in California history.

By the time he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a flaming mountain cabin after a final violent standoff with law enforcement officers he had killed four people, including a San Bernardino County sheriff's detective and a Riverside police officer.

LAPD officials confirmed Evans' account for the Times, and police Chief Charlie Beck said her actions saved lives.

Despite her strong suspicions, Evans was stunned when she learned her hunch had been correct.

"I was absolutely sick," Evans said. "I thought, 'What am I going to do?' At the time Mr. Dorner was terminated, I had a very uneasy feeling. I knew he was very upset and I had concerns that at some point he may try to contact me. So, this was just validating the bad feeling I carried with me for years. I was scared to death."

As soon as the manifesto was discovered Evans and her family were put under guard by a police detail, and remained that way until after Dorner's death.

She said that despite more than a week passing she has yet to return to her home, she has continued to receive threats, and the fear has yet to subside.

"I honestly don't think my life will ever be normal the way it was before," Evans said. "This was such an extraordinary circumstance, I don't know if I'm ever going to feel safe in my home again."

Apple iPhone 5, 4S Beat Samsung Galaxy S3, Become World?s Best-Selling Smartphones In Q4 2012 [Report]

Research firm Strategy Analytics came up with a new survey report of the global smartphone market, in which it said that Apple iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S each outsold the Samsung Galaxy S3 during the fourth quarter of 2012, the lucrative holiday season. While iPhone 5 taking the top spot may not come as surprise, the 16-month old iPhone 4S outperforming one of the popular Android handsets -- Galaxy S3 -- is indeed unexpected.

As per the?data revealed?by Strategy Analytics, Apple shipped an estimated 27.4 million units of iPhone 5 during the fourth quarter of 2012 that helped the flagship device capture an impressive 13 percent share of the global smartphone market and thereby, become the world?s best-selling smartphone.

Even in the second spot, it was Apple again with an estimated 17.4 million units of the iPhone 4S shipped worldwide, accounting for 8 percent of the smartphone share globally in Q4 2012. That said, Apple?s iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S currently appear to be the world?s two most popular smartphone models. Both the smartphones together accounted for one in five of all smartphones shipped worldwide during the period.

According to the survey report, it was the ?rich touchscreen design,? coupled with ?extensive distribution across dozens of countries and generous operator subsidies,? that helped iPhone 5 to outshine other products.

Surprisingly, the popular Samsung Galaxy S3 could manage to be only the third best-selling smartphone model in the world. During the period, Samsung shipped 15.4 million units of the Galaxy S3 globally, capturing 7 percent share of the worldwide smartphone market.

Despite being popular among consumers and operators across North America, Europe and Asia, Samsung Galaxy S3?s market share dropped by over 3 percent from previous quarter.

However, the research firm seemed optimistic about the future of Samsung Galaxy S devices, saying the ?global demand for the Galaxy S3 appears to have peaked and Samsung will surely be keen to introduce its rumored Galaxy S4 upgrade in the coming weeks to fight back against Apple?s popular iPhone range.?

As AppleInsider?noted, the launch of the Apple iPhone 5 months after the May release of the Samsung Galaxy S3 and subsequent price cut of the iPhone 4S to $99 on contract contributed to the remarkable boost in Apple?s sales.

Inhofe, McKeon: Cuts a disaster for military

(CNN) -- During the third and final presidential debate last October, President Obama made a promise to the American people. Sequestration, a package of forced budget cuts, "is not something I proposed," he said. "It will not happen."

What a difference 100 days make.

The military, fatigued after a decade of war, has already endured three rounds of budget cuts during the president's first term alone. It now finds itself little more than a week away from another $500 billion in budget cuts under sequestration, an outcome that would have a profound and lasting impact on the readiness and capabilities of our military for years to come.

Rather than exhibit the leadership required from our commander in chief, the president has been missing in action. With just weeks to spare, the president has belatedly come forward with a proposal based on higher tax revenues and cuts in defense and discretionary domestic spending.

Last week's offer from Senate Democrats holds fast to the president's preferred model and proposes a significant tax increase while asking our military to cut tens of billions more. Despite claims to the contrary, this approach is neither responsible nor balanced and should be deeply troubling to the voters who took Obama at his word during the campaign.

Let's be clear: Defense spending is not what's driving our indefensible national debt. We spend less than 18% of our budget on the military, while mandatory domestic spending accounts for 60%. Despite this fact, the president has refused to consider reforms to mandatory spending -- the real driver of our debt crisis -- while using our troops as a piggy bank to keep unsustainable spending programs on life support.

Borger: President can't kick his legacy down the road

There is a growing concern that the president will not seriously negotiate with Congress on a compromise to sequestration until after it takes place on March 1 and each member of Congress hears of the pain affecting his or her constituents. But the real pain will be felt by the men and women serving our country, who will see arbitrary cuts to the resources they so desperately need. They will be asked immediately to do more with less and accept greater risk in a world that is becoming more dangerous by the day. This is an unconscionable position and a dereliction of duty.

Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta recently stated, "If sequester happens, it is going to badly damage the readiness of the United States of America. We have the most powerful military force on the face of the earth right now. It is important in terms of providing stability and peace in the world. If sequester goes into effect, and we have to do the kind of cuts that will go right at readiness, right at maintenance, right at training, we are going to weaken the United States. And make it much more difficult for us to respond to the crises in the world."

Gen. Martin Dempsey went further in recent testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee and stated that sequestration would put our military on a path where the "force is so degraded and so unready" that it would be "immoral to use the force."

Two weeks ago, the Defense Department announced its decision to indefinitely delay the deployment of the Truman carrier strike group to the Middle East, denying our combatant commander in the most volatile region of the world the capabilities he urgently requires.

The Air Force estimates that if the cuts go into effect, two-thirds of its aircrews will not receive the training hours needed to stay mission-capable. The Army says that an astounding 80% of its combat brigades will be forced to skip necessary training. And nearly a quarter of a million troops could be forced out of the service as the result of layoffs.

Such precarious times should spur meaningful action from the president. Yet every indication we've seen, including his lecturing at the State of the Union address, suggests that his White House is more interested in disavowing responsibility and blaming others.

While the president sits idly by, we have worked tirelessly to spare our military from these devastating cuts. The House voted twice for a proposal sponsored by Rep. Paul Ryan that would replace sequestration with reforms to mandatory spending programs and voted four other times in support of finding a solution to sequestration or forcing the White House to be transparent in how it would implement the cuts.

Members of the Senate -- including most recently Sens. Kelly Ayotte, John McCain and Lindsey Graham -- have repeatedly put forth reasonable and common-sense proposals to the same end.

We have pleaded with the president to, at the very least, accept our proposals as a starting point for a meaningful compromise agreement. We have held multiple hearings and passed the Sequestration Transparency Act so that Congress, the president, and every American would fully understand the truly shocking consequences of sequestration.

Though the hour is late, we remain hopeful that this president will set aside political posturing and finally get serious about working with Congress to find a lasting solution to sequestration. The men and women in uniform deserve nothing less.

Lakers owner Jerry Buss remembered at service

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Magic Johnson, Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant and Jerry West were among a host of basketball greats who gathered to remember the life and legacy of Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss.

They spoke at a memorial service held Thursday for Buss, who died this week at 80 after an 18-month struggle with cancer. The stage at the Nokia Theatre across from Staples Center was bedecked with all 10 of the NBA championship trophies won by the Lakers under Buss and more than 30 floral arrangements.

Johnson punctuated the 1 1/2-hour service by getting the audience on its feet, clapping and cheering for Buss. "He didn't like it sad, he wanted it to be fun," Johnson said.
