Questions Re: HMRC Self-Assessment Online (Among Others- All ...

I have been attempting to find a local accountant or bookkeeper who can help me with my self-assessment at a price I can afford. Also, not being a driver and having a spouse who gets off work at the same time most accountants do is making things difficult. Have a few questions about just filling out this self-assessment form myself online:

    1) I have registered at the site and have just received my password and must use it within 28 days. Haven't done anything yet as I wanted to ask whether it would matter if I did start filling out that form but then later decided to have an accountant do it - would it matter? Is there any reason NOT to just start filling it out to see how simple or difficult it is, what they tell me I owe, and whether it is intuitive and as simple as the HMRC make it sound? My profits and expenses are fairly straightforward, though I have no idea how to calculate home office deducations, capital items, etc. Does this form walk you through that or are you expected to know those figures (having previously worked them out) and just deposit them in the appropriately boxes?

    2) Is there some sort of software that might help with those things I will find difficult to understand and calculate, i.e., deductions, what is allowable, etc? I've heard of TaxCalc and a few others, but after researching cannot get a good feel for whether they walk you through figuring out your deductions on the software or whether, again, you are just expected to have studied this issue and worked these things out. I need something really, REALLY simple, but then if you've read this far and/or read my last posts on UKBF, you already know that.

    3) I have read the terms of service and know that it is not acceptable to advertise jobs here on UKBF, but it is okay to ask if there are any available accountants who have read my prior posts and thus, know my main concerns and can offer me a quote on tax preparation? Is that the same as advertising an available position? I do not want to get into trouble - have found perusing these forums way too helpful to get myself banned right out of the gate!

Below is the link to my prior post, so anyone who is answering my questions here and/or offering their services can be apprised of my concerns.

    {Okay, it wouldn't let me post a URL yet to link to my prior post. You can find them by looking at my profile, I suppose.}

I have what should really be a straightforward self-assessment as far as the figures go, but just not sure if I should wing it myself when it comes to the deductions, capital items, home office calculations, foreign income, currency conversion, etc. In no way do I want to flag myself with the HMRC and I DO want to be 100% honest and pay every bit of tax I owe right on time, just not more than I really owe because I missed deductions. Pretty sure I need a professional but time is getting short and my inability to find one I can afford or who is within a 20-mile drive in Belfast and handles such a "small-potatoes" account as mine is making me think perhaps I should try software or a DIY approach. ??

I guess the main #1 pressing question here is whether there is any reason NOT to just register at the HMRC site and start filling out my assessment, just to see what it is like?

Any kind and helpful comments/suggestions appreciated.

WATCH: Preventing Your Kids From Becoming Bullies, From Carrie Goldman

Recently, Carrie Goldman, parenting expert and author of "Bullied", joined me on Mondays with Marlo and I just had to ask her if she had any advice on how to prevent parents from raising a bully. Not only did she suggest all parents take a long look at how they are raising their children at home, but she also told me about the "hidden influences" like reality TV, which can strongly influence a child.

For more ideas and tips on how you can get involved in ending the bullying epidemic, check out some of Carrie's top tips:

    • Recognize The Problem

Unfortunately, the parents of most bullies are in denial. Prevent your child from becoming a bully by having a consistent, non-authoritarian parenting style. Listen closely to what your child says and be aware of what is going on in their everyday lives.

    • Teach Empathy

Monitor what your kids are watching on TV. Reality-based TV teaches kids that being mean gets you what you want. Bullies see their targets as "others," not as people, so kids should be taught empathy at a young age.

    • Be Present At Your Child's School

Volunteer at your child's school, ideally, at lunchtime or during recess. This is where a lot of bullying occurs. If you're not available during the day, you can volunteer in the evenings or after school and use this time to have discussions about bullying with other parents.

    • Look Out For Warning Signs

If your child is suddenly withdrawn, sad or doesn't want to go to school, they may be a victim of bullying. A lot of girls turn to cutting or eating disorders to deal with their pain. Your child probably won't want to see a counselor, but you're the parent and you need to help even if your child doesn't want to be helped.

    • Create Allies, Not Bystanders

More than 50% of bullying actions will stop within 10 seconds if someone intervenes. Bullies feed off of bystanders. If you or your child witness an act of bullying: Become a witness: Go to the school, and tell them what you or your child saw. Become an ally: Even if your child is afraid of being taunted for showing support to the victim in front of other kids, he or she can send a text message or email to the bullied child later that evening. Kids who are bullied feel isolated, so even a small action like this can make a big difference

    • Block And Delete Online Bullies

Take screenshots of online bullying, so you can report it to the school, or even the police if the situation continues to escalate.

    • Prevent Against Physical Attack

Enroll your child in local martial arts classes. They can learn defensive postures and how to protect themselves. Kids who learn these skills carry themselves more confidently and this might help them become less likely targets.

    • Get The School Involved

If you have a child who is being bullied and the teacher is dismissive, go to the principal. If the principal is dismissive, go to the school board. If you have evidence, they will take the matter more seriously because ultimately, you can go to the police.

    • Understand Long-Term Impact

Recent studies have shown that over time, children's brains change and become more sensitive to bullying. They become more fearful, anxious, and smaller triggers can create the same response, much like post-traumatic stress. Later in life, as adults, many of these children have trouble functioning in society as a result of bullying endured at an early age.

    • Set Family Guidelines For Responsible Media Use

Create a family contract on how you're going to responsibly use all of the technological devices that your children have access to. Go to www.fosi.org/resources, for the Family Online Internet Safety Contract. You can also visit CarrieGoldmanAuthor.com, to find guidance and sample agreements.

    • If Bullying Occurs In Person, Accept A Verbal Taunt

Accepting a verbal taunt will take the power of the bully away. If someone says you're overweight, say, "Yes, you're right. I'm overweight." Using humor is very helpful.

    • Cognitively Re-Frame A Bullying Statement

Don't accept blame; say to yourself, "I'm fine." Compliment the bully, and ask the bully for help. For example, you could say, "You're right. I am a bad speller. Can you help me with that?" This will catch them off-guard.

    • Three Simple Steps To Stop Bullying

      1. Witness it - Pay attention to what is going on your child's life. 2. Document it - Gather evidence: take photographs, save damaged property, or even write the incident and date in a journal. 3. Re-frame it - Take care of your child psychologically; help them find a support group where they feel they can belong.
